On June 8,1935, Glenda Faye was born at home in Lone Grove, Oklahoma to parents AP and Mattie Lewis. The youngest of four daughters, Glenda grew up working alongside her sisters and parents in the grocery store that her family owned in Lone Grove. While attending school and playing basketball at Lone Grove High School, she met Johnny Weger. They were married on Christmas Eve of their senior year 1951. Their first son John was born in 1955. While Johnny worked in the oilfield, Glenda was a homemaker on the family farm. When Johnny was called to the ministry, their little family moved to Shawnee where Glenda worked at the Sylvania plant while Johnny attended OBU. Mark was born in 1960. In 1961 Johnny was called as pastor by Gene Autry Baptist Church and the family moved again. In 1963 James was born. Over the next 20 years Glenda served as a pastor’s wife in churches in Porum, Zanies, Cameron, Henryetta and finally Rock Creek Baptist Church Shawnee. While raising her family Glenda also wore many hats as a pastor’s wife, sometimes pianist but always Sunday School Teacher, WMU leader, and Falls Creek Sponsor. She had some pretty wild Falls Creek stories.
After Johnny’s death in 2009 Glenda continued to work as a receptionist alongside her sons until her retirement in 2020. Glenda enjoyed working in her yard. She loved all things blooming and growing. She knew when to plant, water, and prune. She would often say in early spring “this year I’m not doing any flowers” but then two pots would appear, then two more and before we knew it the yard would be full. She loved watching the birds and spent hours in her sunroom observing them.
Glenda’s other passion was OU women’s basketball. We had season tickets and she never missed a home game and often attended the Big 12 Championship Tournaments. She was sad when OU’s move to SEC meant championships would be too far away for her to attend. Her little schnauzer’s name was Sooner.
Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Florence, Vera and Christine, grandson Matthew Weger and beloved husband of 57 years Johnny. Those left to cherish her memory are sons John (Robin) Weger, Mark Weger and James (Tracey) Weger; Grandchildren – Lori (Chris) Manson, Sarah (Jeff) Barham, Patrick (Kelly) Buttram, Brian (Heather) Weger, Amber Weger, Johnna (Joey) Wallace, Vanessa (Colton) Agee and Rachel (Alaina) Weger.
