

Shawnee resident, Jackie D. Matthews, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 8, 2015. He was born in Prague, OK on May 27, 1930 to William E. and Bertha L. Matthews. He graduated from Shawnee High School, then went on to serve in the Army during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he married the love of his life, Ruby Matthews, on October 6, 1952. They made their home in Shawnee and raised their 3 beautiful children. In their early years, he helped her run Stuckey’s in Cromwell. He later went to work at Tinker Air Force Base and eventually retired. After retirement, he owned Corner Furniture Store. He was a self-made business man, owning several businesses over his lifetime and having numerous rent houses. Jackie was also a man of God. He helped with the Joy Bus Ministry in the 1980’s. He was a Deacon at Blackburn Chapel Baptist church as well as Temple Baptist Church where he also taught the Men’s Bible Class. Jackie was a musician, exceling in the mandolin. He loved playing in his backyard with his friends, brothers, daughter, and granddaughter.
Jackie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby Matthews in 2009; children, Phyllis Ann Plumb and Billy Donald Matthews; daughter-in-law, Pamela Gayle Matthews; sister, Wanda June Penson; brother, Billy Eugene Matthews.
Those left to cherish their memories are his daughter, Betty June Matthews; son-in-law, Phil Plumb; brothers, Charles Matthews and Jerry Matthews; grandchildren, Ralph and Amy Puckett, John and Kelli Plumb, Brian and Shannon Plumb, and Sherri Matthews; great grandchildren, Amy, Ashia, Ashlyn, Anna and Joshua Puckett, Carson, Jace and Landon Plumb, Tate and Reagan Plumb; several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.
