Verna Belle Sproul passed away in her home on January 22, 2026 after a long and valiant battle against Alzheimer’s disease with her loving husband of 34 years, Mark Sproul, at her side. Verna was born Verna Belle Dick in Bessie, Oklahoma on October 6, 1940. She was the daughter of Oleta Mae Dick nee Black and William (Bill) F. Dick. She was baptized at the Peace Lutheran Church on February 16, 1941. Verna was the granddaughter of David Dick and Katherine Dick nee Mueller whose families had homesteaded in Washita County in the Bessie area in the 1890’s.
Verna was raised on the family’s homestead farm just north of Bessie and attended the Bessie public schools. Verna’s family moved into a home in Cordell Oklahoma in the 1950’s and she finished her education at Cordell High School where she graduated in 1958.
On August 21, 1961, Verna married Donald Jones (son of Herman and Frieda Jones) of Cordell at the Peace Lutheran Church in Bessie. Verna and Don then relocated to Ada, Oklahoma where Don began practicing pharmacy after graduation from pharmacy school at Southwestern College in Weatherford. In Ada, Verna gave birth to a son, Steven, in March of 1963 and a daughter, Teresa, in November 1964. While living in Ada, Verna had many careers including being a secretary at People’s Electric Cooperative, a retail salesclerk, and a cosmetologist at Don’s Drug in downtown. She ended her careers in Ada as a beautician with her own hair salon.
After a divorce in 1985, Verna relocated to Edmond, Oklahoma in 1987 to be closer to her children as they embarked on their careers out of Oklahoma City. In Edmond, Verna met and married Mark Sproul in February 1992. In the 1990’s, Verna was blessed with four grandchildren. The grandchildren are Haley Landrith in 1991, Wyatt Landrith and Amelia Jones in 1995, and Andrew Jones in 1997. Verna could not have been prouder than when she was addressed as “Mimi” by these children at her home in Edmond or in subsequent homes on farms in Isabel, Oklahoma and outside of Harper, Kansas. At the time of her passing, Mark and Verna were living their retirement years in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
Verna was preceded in death by her mother, Oleta Dick. who passed away from breast cancer in March 1964, her father, William Dick who passed away in February 1978, and her brother Harold Dick who passed away in April 2023. Verna herself was a breast cancer survivor having been diagnosed in 1999.
