Joe Stewart passed peacefully at home on Friday, September 18, 2020. By his side was his granddaughter and caregiver, Kandice Williams. Joe had a lifelong love of music and enjoyed listening to and playing country music. He was also an avid Nascar fan. He brought humor to every situation and loved to entertain everyone. Joe enlisted into the US Army in December 1961 at the age of 22. After completing boot camp, he attended his formal military occupational training as a Radio & Teletype Operator. He was then assigned to Alpha Company with the 141st Signal Battalion in the fabled 1st Armored Division located at Fort Hood near Austin Texas. In December 1963, PFC Stewart was honorably discharged after 2 years on active duty and was transferred to Fort Knox in Kentucky where he continued to serve an additional 4 years in the Army Reserves until December 1967. During his service he received the Distinguished Service award. Like many family members, he then began a decades long career at Belknap Hardware, where he worked several jobs, eventually ending up as a commercial artist in the Advertising department. He also did freelance artwork for well-known companies such as Rubbermaid and even drew the original Bunny Bread logo. (That’s what I said!) Joe was preceded in death by his wife Wanda Stewart, brother Bill Stewart, and sisters Sharon Russell and Cora Stewart. Here to carry on his memory are his sister Mary Ann Kaufman, brother Tom Stewart, daughters, Dee-Dee Kaelin (Frank), Pam Clark (Tim), and Cynthia Baker, grandchildren Savanah Kaelin, Kandice Williams, Brandon Baker, Alysha Baker, and Serissa Clark, great grandson and best friend, “Junior” and many other friends and family who loved him dearly. Funeral service will be held at 6pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 in the chapel of Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home (Preston Hwy. at Brooks Rd.) with burial to follow on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery. Friends and Family may pay their respects on Wednesday from 1pm until time of service at the funeral home.
