Senior Master Sargent, retired, George John Johnson passed peacefully to his eternal reward on Sunday, October 7, 2018. George was born May 10, 1942 to Virginia and John Johnson and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1967 where he and his first wife, Lucy, began and grew their family.
George had a career in steel construction and then in quality assurance for the US government, but he was most proud to be a 35-year veteran of the US Air Force. He served as a flight mechanic then a flight engineer on both the C-7 and C-130 Hercules aircraft. He fought in the Vietnam War and Desert Shield/Storm and loved the fraternity and brotherhood of the service.
George was a renaissance man, excelling in many different areas. In his youth, he rebuilt a car, even reupholstered it himself. He is licensed to drive anything from a motorcycle to an 18-wheeler. He built a television from scratch and was an excellent woodworker. He enjoyed building and flying remote control airplanes, collecting and building HO railroads, and was also a consummate baker. His mass production of cookies and apple pies at Christmas will be sorely missed.
After the loss of his first wife, George was blessed to find love again. He met Eleanor Marshall and they developed a friendship, which grew into love. They spent 7 years together traveling, fishing, and enjoying their hobbies. George along with his wife, Eleanor, was an active participant at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. George used his baking skills to help the Men’s Club and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and leader of the Honor Guard in 2016.
George developed AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) during the last year of his life. He fought valiantly, but the disease got the better of him. Throughout it all, George had a positive attitude, and brought joy and laughter to all he encountered. George was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine (Lucy), his mother, Virginia, and his father, John. George is survived by his wife, Eleanor, his children, Cary (David) Blackburn and John from his first wife, Lucy (deceased), his grandchildren, Katie, Rachel, and Jonathan, his sister, Marlene Gavlek, and his step-grandchildren, Ariana and Carter Crews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 12:00pm at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Flowery Branch, GA. A committal service with military honors will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 3:00 at Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens in Snellville, GA.
