It is with great sadness that the family of Edward C. Markiewicz, 93, of Plantsville, Connecticut, share the news of his passing. Ed, Eddy, or Big Ed, as he was affectionately called, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following complications from a fall.
Ed was the beloved husband of the late Marie “Marge” Markiewicz (Gugliotti), who passed away in 2014 and with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
Ed was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 19, 1928. The son of Mary Markiewicz and brother to Jane Reilly and Cecilia Markiewicz. Ed moved to Plantsville, Connecticut, after meeting Marge at a soda fountain shop in Philadelphia and it was love at first sight.
They married February 20, 1954. They raised four children, Edward Markiewicz Jr. of Portland, OR, Bethann Welch of Barrington, NH, Suzanne Gwiazdowski of Cape Coral, FL, and Paula Yetman of Taunton, MA. Ed retired from Pratt & Whitney after a long and successful career which afforded Ed and Marge many opportunities to travel the United States and Europe.
Ed and Marge built a beautiful home on Buckland Street in Plantsville, where their home was the gathering place for many family holidays, particularly Easter breakfast in the sunroom and Thanksgiving dinner. The house was alive with friends and family and raucous card games with the grandchildren who added a new dimension to the Markiewicz household.
Nathan Markiewicz of Austin, TX, Graham Markiewicz of Washington DC, Mason Welch of Dover, NH, Kelly Hackett of Rollinsford, NH, Dr. Michael Gwiazdowski of Poughkeepsie, NY, Michelle Woods of Middleton, NH, and Nicholas Gwiazdowski of Ithaca, NY (Ed’s partner in crime). He was blessed to know and spoil his four great grandchildren; Anthony and Jay Woods, Sterling Eugene Markiewicz and Margaret “Little Margie” Hackett named for her grandmother.
Ed was known as big joker. His wit, hijinks and twinkle in his baby blue eyes will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday July 2, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt Street, Plantsville. Calling hours will be in the church starting at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
