Meriden – Eugene “Lenny” Clements, 64, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.  He was born July 28, 1944 in New Britain, CT, the son of the late Vincent and Mary (Misorek) Clements of Southington.

He was raised in Southington and graduated from Southington High School in 1963.  Len was an outstanding athlete, playing football, basketball, baseball, and was a sprinter in track.  He was captain of his high school football team, led the state in scoring, and received many accolades.  Lenny was selected for the Class B division All State Football Team and scored the winning touchdown in the 1962 East vs. West Game.  After serving in the Navy he went on to proudly serve as a Firefighter for the city of Meriden for 33 years.

Len continued to participate in city leagues in his spare time, playing for the North Italian Home Club and Popular Restaurant and basketball at the Southington YMCA. He enjoyed going on cruises with his wife and friends, giving “advice” to his children and spending time with his grandkids. He was also known for his construction skills. Lenny was full of life and passed his work ethic and love of sports on to his children. He was also an avid golfer and played in the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Tournament for the past 24 years.

Lenny leaves behind his devoted  and loving wife Judy Clements of Meriden; his son Kevin Clements of Meriden; grandchildren Kevin Thomas, Jordan Elizabeth, Lauren Kelley, Julia Elise and Ryan Leonard from Cheshire; his daughter Kaitlyn (Katie) Dolan and her husband Timothy, his youngest grandson Patrick Jude of New Britain, his former wife Diarmid Kelley of Southington. He also leaves his step children, Peter DeMartin of Georgia and Christine Racine and her husband Hank of Virginia.

He leaves behind his siblings Jerome, Edward, George, John, and his wife Sheila, Clements, and sisters Romaine Dube of Southington, and Christine DeLuco of Berlin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters Regina Zale and Marie Gorely and his brothers Thomas, Vincent, and Joseph Clements.

In addition to his family, Lenny leaves behind all of his loyal friends at the North Italian Home Club, his golf partners, his brotherhood of firefighters, and his best friends Ed Cortright, John Francis, Dennis Gaffney, Dan Lyons, Steve Mauri, Brendan and Bernard Noonan and Greg Polanski.  He and his family would like to thank them for all their love and support.

Calling hours will be on Friday from 4-7PM at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Southington.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 9:15 AM from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home to the Immaculate Conception Church for a mass at 10:00 AM followed by the rite of Christian burial at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Lenny and his family would like to thank Dr. Kathleen Bober-Sorcinelli of Midstate Medical Center and Dr. Dennis Cooper of Yale New Haven Hospital for their dedication and treatment of him.  A special thank you also goes to Diane Lafferty and Kathy Clements who gave him the strength, courage, faith and hope he (and his family) needed during his treatment.  A big thank you to all the wonderful nurses and aides at Midstate Medical Center for making his time there a peaceful one.  Finally, a gracious thank you to the staff at Masonic Center for their dedication to their profession and amazing support in helping Lenny and his family through his final days.
