

Southington - Herbert Helms, 84, of Southington and formerly of West Hartford, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2012 surrounded by his family at Hospital of Central CT, New Britain. He was the beloved and loving husband of Joan (Seymour) Helms for 58 years. He was born April 12, 1927 son of the late Hans and Anna (Munch) Helms.
Herbert was a graduate of Hartford Trade School and State Technical Institute. He retired from Cooper Industries as a Tooling Specialist Engineer. He belonged to the Farmington Tunxis Bowling League. After his retirement he drove a van for the Talcott Mountain Science Center and a special ed van for the town of West Hartford. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels in West Hartford for 8 years and was a volunteer at Southington Bread for Life for 10 years. Previously, he was on the Spring Lake Village Condo #8 Association Board. He was an active member of St. Paul?s Episcopal Church for 10 years and had been a member of St. James?s Episcopal Church in West Hartford for almost 50 years. In his spare time he loved tending to his garden and traveling. He had an abiding interest in steam trains, trolley cars and was a WWII buff. Herbert adored spending time with his family and they always came first. His grandchildren affectionately referred to him as ?Boppy?.
Besides his wife he is survived by his daughters, Julie Poulin and her husband Daniel and Karen DiDomenico and her husband Jeffrey all of Southington, his 5 grandchildren, Danielle Griswold and her husband Kevin, Shawn Poulin, Lisa Kohanski and her husband Brian, Cory DiDomenico and girlfriend Stephanie Cyr and Steven DiDomenico, a great grandchild Kassidy Griswold and a nephew Kenneth Hanscom of W. Hartford. He was predeceased by a sister Gertrude Hanscom and niece Sharon Hanscom.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, March 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul?s Episcopal Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in his memory to St. Paul?s Episcopal Church, 145 Main St., Southington, CT 06489.
