Irene Smuda

Irene (Hawrylik) Smuda, 84, of Southington, widow of Stanley Smuda, was called home to heaven on Wednesday, October 1, 2008.   Irene was born on November 13, 1923 in New Britain,  the daughter of the late Vincent and Mary (Witkowski) Hawrylik. Irene and Stanley married on September 14, 1946 at Sacred Heart Church in New Britain. They continued to reside in New Britain until moving to Southington in 1961.   Stanley, her loving husband of 55 years died in 2002.   Irene was a devout Catholic and a long-time member of St. Thomas Church.    

After graduating from New Britain High School in 1941, Irene worked as a timekeeper and Assistant Supervisor for Corbin Screw in New Britain during the War. She later worked for Landers, Frary, and Clark in New Britain.   After raising her sons, she returned to work as a bookkeeper for her brother-in-law, Joe Smuda, at E.F. Kilduff Company in Kensington, retiring in 1985.

Irene was a very loving, caring and supportive wife and mother.  She will be sorely missed by her two sons, Donald Smuda and his wife Gail of Southington; and John Smuda and his wife Judy of Marlborough.  She is also survived by her brother, Edward Hawrylik of New Britain; her sister, Florence “Kitty” Bialobrzeski of Berlin; her sister-in-law Betty Hawrylik of Kensington; and many nieces and nephews.  Besides her husband and parents, she was pre-deceased by her brother Raymond Hawrylik of Kensington, and a special aunt, Lydia Witkowski of Berlin.  She will also be missed by her friends Angie Dorio, Dorothy Charette, and Mitzie Cannarella.  

Irene’s family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, October 3, 2008 at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Street, Southington from 5-8 p.m.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 4, 2008 at St. Thomas Church, 99 Bristol St., Southington.   Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in New Britain.  Memorial donations may be made to Saint Thomas Church.
