

Capt. Robert J. Egan, Meriden Firefighter Ret., 97, of Southington, formerly of Meriden, beloved husband of Rose (Papandrea) Egan, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Southington Health Care. “Bob” as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Meriden on July 24, 1926 and was the son of the late Thomas P. and Margaret (Fleming) Egan. He was educated in the Meriden school system and enlisted in the United States Army in 1944 where he was stationed in Germany during World War II. In 1946, Bob was honorably discharged from the military and settled down in Meriden where he began his family. In 1957, he began a 33 year career as a firefighter with the city of Meriden. During his tenure as a fireman, he worked his way through the ranks, becoming a training officer and working in each firehouse, retiring in 1981 from Engine Co. 4 on Colony Street with the rank of captain. During his retirement, he and his wife Rose, travelled extensively, visiting 80 countries and six of the seven continents. In 1981, Bob and Rose were gifted a trip on the SST Concorde, making the 3 ½ hour trip from New York to London. He was also an avid Red Sox fan and a parishioner of Mary Our Queen of Southington. Besides his wife Rose, of 41 years, Bob is survived by his two daughters; Mary Brown and her husband Richard of Burlington and Cindy Egan and her husband Henri Petit of Southington. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren; Lindsay Petit of Bristol, Cassandra Brown of Bristol, Michael Petit of Meriden, Patrick Petit and Caitlin Petit both of Southington. He is also survived by his brother in law John S. Papandrea and his two sons; John James Papandrea and his wife Lisa of Maine and James John Papandrea, a nephew Stephen Loo and his wife Connie and their two daughters Stephanie and Sophia of California, grand-niece Lauren Papandrea-Smith and her husband Ryan of East Hampton, CT and his special niece Melisa Robinson of Rocky Hill, CT. Bob was predeceased by his first wife Mary (Boysuk) Egan who passed away in 1979 and by his brother, Thomas Egan. A funeral home service for Bob will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023 at 11:00 AM in the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Southington, CT 06489. Calling hours will be from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, 250 Gypsy Ln. Meriden, CT 06450.
