Gertrude Koopman

Born September 30, 1936 in Pietersbierem, The Netherlands, after a brief illness, Gertie passed away peacefully with family by her side on October 17, 2023 at the age of 87 to be with her Lord and Saviour.

Predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend Charles “Charlie” in 2004, brothers Sidney and George and grandson Michael. Dear mother of Marion and Rob Hassebroek, Lorraine and Ron Strychar, Ed and Cathy Koopman and Jim Koopman. Cherished Oma of Jason, Kevin, Jackie (Braiden), Johnathan, Kristyn (Brad), Lauren (Nick) and Great Oma to 10 great-grandchildren.

Gertie came to Canada with her family in 1949 and settled in the Niagara area where she met her husband to be, Charlie Koopman. They were married in 1958 and raised their family of four children in St. Catharines. Gertie lived her life always supporting her husband, their children and their families. She was also a very involved and dedicated member of Covenant Christian Reformed Church, a great friend to hers sisters Grace and Evelyn and to her many neighbors at Martindale Place.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in Oncology 3B at the St. Catharines Site of the Niagara Health System for their wonderful care of our Mom over the last few weeks.

The family will receive friends at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 278 Parnell Road., St. Catharines for visitation on Sunday, October 22, 2023 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at the Church on Monday, October 23, 2023 at 11:00 am with luncheon to follow. Private interment will precede the Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Niagara Health Foundation. On-line tributes may be made at www.hulseandenglish.com.
