

Helen “Betty” Elizabeth (nee Nurse) Holden, 94, peacefully passed into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, June 27, 2014, at her home in St. Catharines, Ontario. Predeceased by her beloved husband Theodore Holden, who has been patiently waiting for his love in heaven since 1964. She was born on November 22, 1919 in Govan, Saskatchewan, the eldest daughter to the late Jean (nee MacPherson) and Stanley William Nurse.
Betty trained as a school teacher at Toronto’s Normal School and taught for many years in the Leaside Public School system. After her retirement Betty used this passion to teach the English language to new Canadians. Many lifelong friendships were formed during this time. Always inspired to help, Betty penned a book that was used for teaching New Canadian Immigrants, which Ontario used for many years.
She was an amazingly talented painter, teacher and woman of faith, who shaped the lives of many by her tireless Christian example. Betty will be fondly remembered by her family and dear friends.
Survived by her sister Joy Stasior and her husband Richard of Liverpool, New York. Nephews Paul Stasior of Liverpool, NY and David (Janine) Stasior of Concord, Mass; niece Carol (Joe) Mayer of Hampton, NH; seven great nieces and nephews; a great-great nephew and great-great niece.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Niagara Ina Grafton Gage, 413 Linwell Road, St. Catharines, with a reception immediately following. Burial will take place in Toronto at 2:00 p.m. in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 375 Mt. Pleasant Road.
