Together as family and friends we share profound sadness. We have lost our bright light, our peace-maker, Jamin. Jamin ( "Jim" or "J" as he preferred to be called) passed away peacefully, surrounded by joined family love at age 31 on June 14, 2023 at Toronto General Hospital.
Jamin leaves to grieve his former spouse Ingrid (Coulter), as well as his beloved ones, "the littles" -- Evelyn ("Bub") age 5, and Claire ("Claire Bear") age 3. He loved and adored his daughters, and put his needs as secondary to the fun, adventures, cuddles and love that they shared.
Born on Dec. 22, 1991 in Calgary, Alberta Jamin was brought home from the hospital Christmas Eve, and is thus remembered as the best present ever. Jamin is profoundly missed by his mother Laurie Hobson (step-father Jonathan) and father Derrick Mueller (step-mother Stacy) as well as his former in-laws John and Corina Coulter.
As the youngest in the Mueller family, Jamin was inseparable from his only sister and best friend, Bethany. Jamin's two brothers Caleb (Nicole Marsh) and Jesse (Trevor Wright) are crushed to let him go, as are his nephew Esaiah (10) and niece Selah (13). Step-brothers Ben (Nicole) Roy, David Roy, Stephen Roy and Phillip Roy, as well as step-niece Margot & step-nephew Ellis will not forget Jamin's sense of humour, thoughtful personality, and ability to ease into every conversation.
Jamin is predeceased by his grandparents Stanley & Norma Hobson, and Fred Mueller & Barbara Jennings, and is in the thoughts and prayers of numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
For Jamin's special trio of friends, who came to be known as "adopted into the fam" -- Mike and Amy Vanderburgh, and James Hilverda -- life has a hole in it now.
Jamin is remembered fondly as a person of extraordinary crackling wit, an unexpected repository of zany pop culture references, and a crafty foe in Settlers of Catan. As an earnestly sought-after swim buddy and Nintendo tutor, he was equipped with a tenacious spirit that could master anything he pursued. Jamin had an incisive mind that was always whirring and evaluating, and his eminently sociable, hang out with able personality filled whatever room he happened to be in (without socks, of course!).
Jamin's always preferred rain over sun, cold over warmth, giving over receiving, listening over speaking, and always, always --- coffee to wake him every morning.
When Jamin was nearly two, the family moved to the small town of Hepburn, Saskatchewan. Jamin made a good childhood friend in Caleb Friesen, and recently spoke of what a great pal he was. Thomas the Tank Engine was a delight to Jamin as a young child, and he set his mind to collecting every engine he could. The bins full of Furbies and Lego that Jamin amassed meant a great deal to him. Jamin always said that when he grew up he wanted to work for Lego!
As a youngster, it was commonplace in the Mueller household to find Jamin along with his brother Jesse building elaborate imaginary worlds together, filling the room from corner to corner with every building, box, and toy they could find. Christmas was such a thrill for Jamin that it was not unusual for him to suffer an upset stomach out of sheer anticipation.
When the family moved to Waterloo Region in 2001, Jamin attended Plattsville Christian School, and later, Christ Lutheran School. Jamin relished his time with his classmates, especially on his birthday when he would have hot tub parties, home-made tacos, and of course, Bugles. It was sooo like Jamin to turn Bugles into finger puppets.
Jamin routinely beat his mom in Scrabble and played "Coldplay" music to keep the game going. Dad and Jamin frequently would duck out to catch whatever was new in the theatres, and no matter how bad the movie ended up being, they always enjoyed spending time together as buddies. Dance Dance Revolution, Super Mario Bros. games and learning classical guitar were important parts of Jamin's teen years.
Despite receiving a Crohn's disease diagnosis, Jamin completed his last year of High School at Woodland Christian School where he struck up an immediate, life-long friendship with Mike Vanderburgh. While at Woodland, Jamin also work part-time after hours at Tim Hortons in Kitchener. Through his ambition, hard work, and diligence he was able to ascend the ladder at Tim Hortons, assuming the responsibility of supervisor before he had even turned 16! He also demonstrated these same gifts while pursuing his talent for distance running, ultimately meeting his dream by completing the RBC Marathon in Toronto.
Jamin pursued a Bachelor Arts (hons.), majoring in Psychology at Redeemer University in Ancaster, where his dear friend Mike joined him. Amy entered the picture, meeting Mike and Jamin. By the time graduation came along, Jamin had the honor of serving as Best Man to the couple at their wedding. From that point onward, the three followed each other everywhere without intending to, first working at Camp Arnes in Manitoba, and then meeting again in Welland at Canadian Tire Credit Services Division. Jamin was proud of the work he did at Canadian Tire and sought to advance and better himself in serving clients.
Of utmost importance to Jamin were his two girls and the many times together they would play Lego, explore playgrounds, frequent splashpads, swim, and visit family and friends. Wednesday was McDonald's night, a tradition Ingrid and the girls have already continued in his absence.
Recently Jamin began pursuing his interest in photography, taking online courses in the field, purchasing equipment and exploring nature at Bird Kingdom and other venues. Despite feeling especially tired and unwell this spring, Jamin continued to tweak the light, colour, and angles of his photos in pursuit of his desire to become a street photographer.
As a gift given to all for this brief time, Jamin touched people with his unique self. Fly away dear Jamin! No more pain. No more worries. We were blessed to know you.
Our families wish to thank the fabulous staff at Toronto General Hospital, who diligently treated Jamin to the best of their ability and offered their expertise and utmost compassion in treating the rare cancer that attacked his immune system.
In memory of Jamin, please consider raising a toast to him with a good craft stout or porter beer which he would enjoy when he felt well or take a loved one to Bird Kingdom (birdkingdom.ca) and marvel at the sights and sounds Jamin came to so appreciate.
Donations may also be made in memory of Jamin to The Toronto General Hospital (support.uhnfoundation.ca), Crohn's and Colitis Canada (crohnsandcolitis.ca), or McMaster Children's Hospital (hamiltonhealth.ca).
Both Derrick and Stacy, Laurie and Jonathan and their families thank you for your condolences at this time. Derrick, Stacy and family will be directly in touch with you should a celebration of life or service be planned in the future in memory of Jamin. Laurie, Jonathan and family will celebrate Jamin's life as a family with his "adopted into the fam" friends. Cremation has taken place.
