Much beloved husband of Patricia and father of Peter, Jennifer and Candice; Stepfather to Tracey and John; Grandfather to Andrea and David; Step grandfather to Scott, Kate, Jake and Rod passed away at West Lincoln Hospital, Thursday December 18th. After suffering declining health over the last several years Stuart passed away with Patricia at his side. He will be sorely missed by his family, extended family and his many close and dear friends. We thank all who helped care for and loved Stuart during the decline of his health, which made his difficult journey easier.
Stuart was born in Ireland, went to Trinity College Dublin and joined the Navy when he turned nineteen and was in the Fleet Air Arm training when he was injured and honourably discharged so was unable to see active service. During his school years he was very active in track and field sports and won many silver medals and trophies. His other sport love was rugby and he was presented with a very much coveted cap.
He came to Canada in 1947 and followed a very prolific career in Architecture. He worked on various projects throughout the world. Mostly Health Care related and because of this connection he continued with volunteer work in this field after retirement. He was a volunteer with St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto on the Cardiac Unit, and then with St. Catharines General Hospital and latterly with Upper Canada Lodge.
Although, plagued by many health issues, Stuart retained his sense of humour throughout his illness and was always a joy to those who came in contact with him. Those who knew him, will remember he loved good music, a well told story and if you couldn't tell it with interesting details he was happy to provide you with a more interesting version the next time you heard it. He also loved travel, nature, our small garden and he so loved to dance and spent many Saturday evenings dancing with Pat at the Inn On the Park before their move to St. Catharines to retire. Several years ago, Stuart was very happy to have had the chance to reconnect with his Irish roots and his wonderful Irish cousins and travel the path of his youth once more.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at the HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 75 Church St. St. Catharines (905-684-6346) from 12 – 1 p.m. A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family. On line tributes may be made at www.hulseandenglish.com.
“Stuart will be sadly missed by his family and close friends, and to Stuart we say adieu.”
