Ed was born in St. Louis on October 22, 1942, to Elmer and Mary Braun. He attended Epiphany of Our Lord for grade school and Bishop DuBourg High School. He graduated from Saint Louis University. His career was in finance, retiring from Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Groves as Comptroller.
Ed’s faith shaped his life, and service through the Roman Catholic Church was the way he and Marilyn contributed to their community, including many years teaching PSR (Parish School of Religion) classes and Preparation for Marriage classes through St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church.
In 2002, he and Marilyn relocated to Fort Myers, Florida, where they spent two wonderful and active decades. Although they golfed a little and biked a lot, their volunteer activities there were their passion, most notably with the Lee County Visitors Commission Bureau (VCB) at RSW, the airport in Fort Myers. Most likely, if a Tuesday night or a Friday morning during in-season, Ed and Marilyn – attired in coordinated VCB gear – would be at the desks, ready to share their love for Sanibel and the larger Fort Myers area, as well as correct information about baggage claim and directions to rental cars, with those arriving on vacation.
Ed planned many family trips while Stephen and Elizabeth were growing up, and then the travel he and Marilyn did after the kids were grown, including a Rocky Mountaineer train excursion. They visited every state except Hawaii – and since they knew they lived in their tropical paradise, that omission was intentional. Ed achieved a lifelong dream of owning a Corvette, a notable departure from his otherwise practical mindset.
He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth (Robert), and Stephen (Carrie).
Visitation will be from 9:30 am until time of Mass at 10:30 am at St. Justin Martyr (11910 Eddie & Park Road) on Friday, February 14. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery for family and close friends.
Instead of flowers, the family requests gifts in his memory be made to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, link below.
Ed’s family welcomes memories of him that celebrate his life so well lived.
We are grateful for the many kindnesses we have received in the last few weeks. We express our thanks to the friends and family supporting each of us during this unexpected time, as well as our gratitude to the care team at St. Mary's.
Marilyn, Elizabeth, and Stephen
