

Swallow, Edwin L., age 97, peacefully entered into rest on February 14, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Violet "Jonnie" (nee Hancock) Swallow. Dearest father of David (Dianne) Swallow, Karen (Steve) Kissel, Diane (David) Kindt and Jim (Theresa) Swallow. Loving grandfather of Tom (Summer) Swallow, Elizabeth (Doug) Opalka, Natalie Swallow; Jeff (Kelly) Kissel and Lauren (Dan) Magee; Melanie (Nathan) Painter, Julie (Todd) Shaw, Valerie Katz; Meghan (Trevor) Nohe and Bryan (Missy) Swallow. Beloved great grandfather of eleven. Dear brother of George (Jackie) Swallow and Louis (the late Jeanne) Swallow. Dearest brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend of many.
Ed graduated from Washington University in 1941 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January, 1943 and completed the V7 program for college graduates, training at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis for 3 months to become an officer. During World War II, Ed was an Engineer Officer on a destroyer escort, the U.S.S. Buckley DE51, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. The crew of U.S.S. Buckley received the Navy Presidential Unit Citation for ramming and sinking the German submarine U66 and taking 36 German prisoners of war. After World War II, Ed worked briefly at General Electric Lamp Works, where he met Violet Hancock, the love of his life and his wife for 63 years. Ed worked at Union Electric (now Ameren UE) for 38 years as an Electrical Engineer on power plant and substation projects. From 1976 to 1985, he worked on the design and construction team for the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant. Ed retired in 1985 and enjoyed traveling to his Navy ship reunions and visiting his children and grandchildren across the country.
Visitation: Thursday, February 22, 2018, 6-8PM at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa at Watson, and Friday 9-10AM in the funeral home chapel prior to the funeral service beginning at 10AM. The interment will follow in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. If desired, please make expressions of sympathy in Ed's memory to The USO.
