

Martin was the loving husband of Henrietta (nee Schweigert) Buchheit; devoted father of Susan L. Buchheit, Brenda (Douglas) Rupp, Martin L. Buchheit, Brian (Shelly) Buchheit, Geralyn Buchheit, Laura (Steven) Free, and Sandra K. (Michael) Arndt; dear grandfather of 20 and great-grandfather of 6; dear uncle, great-uncle and a friend to many in his lifetime.
Martin was born in Apple Creek, Missouri, on December 5, 1931. He was the youngest of 13 children born to Leo M. & Anna (Ponder) Buchheit, all who have preceded him in death. He served our country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge in February of 1955, he attended barber school. Later that year, he and Henrietta were married on September 17, and together they raised their seven children in Saint Louis.
Martin and Henrietta were active in the Pro-Life Committee with the St. Louis Archdiocese and were parishioners of St. Thomas More Catholic Church until its closure. Martin co-owned and managed The Teakwood Shop II in Florissant for 26 years before returning to Ferguson to work at The Teakwood Shop. He continued to barber and offer hair styling services to his customers for 60 years, until his retirement in 2015.
Martin had the privilege of being on an Honor Flight to Washington DC. He was a member of the American Legion Post 133 for over 60 years, the Western Catholic Union for over 50 years, and a longtime member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local #665.
Martin will be remembered as a man who loved his work because he loved people. He was a great conversationalist. He enjoyed being outdoors and spent many weekends on their Christmas tree farm. In 1991, he was recognized by the U.S. Tree Farmers Association as the Southeast Missouri "Tree Farmer of the Year."
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 6, from 5-7:30pm at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa Street 63109. A second visitation will be on Wednesday, May 7 from 9-10am at St. Agnes Home, 10341 Manchester Road Kirkwood Missouri 63122 followed by the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10am. Interment Resurrection Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, Masses preferred.
