Carole Angela Michaels (“Angel”),age78, died February 18th, 2025 at her home in Tampa, Florida. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Bette and Ben Johnson of Ocho Rios, Jamaica as well as her father and stepmother, Jack and Mary Michaels of Orlando, Florida.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana she lived her early years in Orlando and New Smyrna Beach, Florida. In her early teens she moved with her family to Ocho Rios, Jamaica where she lived until graduating high school. After leaving the island she attended and graduated from Florida State University where she was proud and loyal member of the Tri Delta sorority until her death. Shortly after graduation she moved to Manhattan and worked as a tour guide and then a conference officer for the United Nations which further sparked her interest in foreign affairs and foreign languages. With her true spirit of fun, travel and adventure she visited many countries and even had periods of employment in Morocco, France and Iran. She ultimately returned to the United States and a lasting career at Broward College as a teacher of ‘English as a Second Language.” She enjoyed her adult students, befriending many who had been displaced and needed a friend or encouragement in a new country.
She always became quickly involved in the communities where she lived and was a lifelong member of the Junior League. She was passionate about gardening and was a recent member of the Davis Islands Garden Club. She loved to swim and the ocean in general, having learned to sail and crew sailboats years ago with her brother Mark in southern California. Needless to say she also loved “all things Jamaican.”
Angel knew no strangers and held prejudices against no one. Her smile was contagious. She valued greatly her friendships and stayed connected with many of her friends for decades. Her family, at times also scattered across the globe, could always count on her to keep them all connected with the latest family news and the best stories. She was the ultimate sentimentalist.
She leaves behind a very large family who loved her dearly and will miss her daily :
Her brothers : Rick Michaels, Ken Michaels, Ward Michaels and Mark Johnson and spouses and children.
Her sisters: Robin DeComas and Marlene Catanese and spouses and children.
Several cousins, a cherished goddaughter ( Kim Dubois) and an extensive group of nephews, nieces and grand/great nieces and nephews who she adored and celebrated every milestone and accomplishment. She also reluctantly leaves behind too many very good friends to name.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please choose the charity of your choice in her memory as she would want you to do…or plant a tree, preferably a palm tree..
