David Warren Streater, US Army, was born in Oakland, CA January 12, 1945. He died in Tampa, FL January 24, 2024, at age 79. David is the second of seven children of the late Rev. Dr. John Baxter Streater and Carol Lane Streater. He lived in China from age two until almost seven, along with his brother John, when his parents served as missionaries. During those years he grew up speaking fluent Chinese as well as English. Two of his younger sisters were born in China.
The family returned to the United States the end of 1951 first living in Mississippi. He attended public schools in Mississippi, Texas, and Florida, before graduating from Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport, FL in 1963. He moved with his family to the San Francisco area in January 1965.
David attended three years of college including St. Petersburg College, Westmont College, CA, and Simpson College, CA, before joining the U.S. Army in November 1966. David served in the Army for 3 years in Germany. Upon his return, he lived in St. Petersburg and Tampa, where he attended classes at USF, and then moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area in California. He returned to Tampa in 1998 to be closer to his parents and other family members.
David was a fun loving, intelligent, charismatic person, who loved a good conversation, reading, music, long walks, family, and friends. He worked as a security guard, taxi driver, and delivery driver. David fought a good fight against the challenge and struggle of paranoid schizophrenia since his mid-20s. We appreciate the services he received at the VA Hospitals and the many people who assisted him along the way, especially Nick Ciccarello of Plant City.
David is preceded in death by his parents, John and Carol Streater, nephew Jamie Streater, and brother-in-law Wayne Hook. He is survived by his six siblings, John Streater (Priss), Mary Claire Hook, Marilyn Sanford, Liz Streater (Don), Sharon Streater Buczek (Joseph), and Harold Streater (Alice), as well as Aunt Ruth Lane Smith, Uncle Roy Shaffer, Aunt Arlyne Lane, and many beloved nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many cousins.
