His parents, brother (Gary Smith) and son Matthew S Smith are deceased.
Surviving are his daughter, Bethann (Smith) Stinson, step sons Michael and Scott Amos, grandsons Chandler and Ethan Stinson, like a granddaughter to him Silvana Hernandez and Russell Lancaster who was like a son to him.
DeVerl was a graduate of Mishawaka High School where he played football. One of his favorite sayings was that he graduated from the school of hard knocks after high school.
He loved Notre Dame sports, driving his corvette around town and across Route 66. He also enjoyed collecting things such as coins, stamps, books, Christmas decorations and much more.
DeVerl played softball with Dodge Mfg teams for several years and coached and umpired little league teams for his kids.
Working in Sales for Phillips Industries and then RV Sales he began his own business.
DeVerl moved to Florida and worked in the cargo trailer industry. His clients weren't just customers, they were friends that enjoyed his weekly visits.
He never knew a stranger and enjoyed socializing with friends in Florida and old high school buddies.
People described him as "One of a kind" "A Gem" "to know him, was to love him" "A best friend"
Despite his illness he continued to maintain an active life with his daughter and grandsons who he loved more than anything. And not to forget his best fur buddy Milo (goldendoodle) who sat next to him until the end.
DeVerl was a giver-but he was a lot more than that. He was not afraid of judgement, romance, friendship, being wrong, a bad joke, a good laugh, a good time or consequences. Unfair that life was hard at times, the loss of his son, brother, mom and dad, divorces, bad judgement but his greatest achievement was his daughter, son and two grandsons.
He was an amazing father, friend and man who will be missed by many.
