

BONANNO, Domenico C. "Don", 84, lifelong resident of Tampa, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2022. Don was born on June 5, 1938 to the late Josephine and Nicholas Bonanno. He attended the old Jefferson High School Class of 1956. Don then went on to join the U.S. Navy. After the Navy he returned home where he became a proud City of Tampa firefighter and then went on to be Station 1 District Fire Chief and retired after 25 years. Don was also a member of the Sons of Italy. Don was an avid Rays fan. He enjoyed woodworking, dominos, fishing, bocce ball and his 5 o'clock cocktail.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mercedes Bonanno; son, Michael Bonanno (Penny); daughter, Debra Burgner (Mark); two grandsons, Matthew Burgner (Aleena) and Andrew Burgner (Georgina); sister, Carmen "Patty" Galanos; beloved dog, Rocky; extended family and friends..
The family would like to give special thanks to Barbara Tripp, Tampa Fire Chief, for everything she has done and just for being there for the family to lean on. Also, thank you to the Blue Wing at Melech Hospice House for their kindness and compassion for Don as well as the family.
A memorial service will take place at Gonzalez Funeral Home on Saturday, June 18, at 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. An inurnment will be held at a later date at Bay Pines National Cemetery with Navy Military Honors.
