Born and raised in Tampa, Rick attended Gorrie Elementary School, Wilson Middle School, and Henry B. Plant High School before continuing his education at Flagler College in St. Augustine. His early years in Florida shaped his lifelong appreciation for nature, the water, and creative expression.
Rick lived a life marked by adventure, independence, and curiosity. He spent many years in Jamaica, where he operated a coffee plantation. Upon returning to the United States, he founded Jamaica Hellfire, a successful hot sauce business. He also had a deep love for animals and dedicated time working as a veterinary technician, a role that reflected his compassion and gentle spirit.
A true renaissance man, Rick was known as a fisherman, musician, artist, author, farmer, cook, collector, naturalist and investor. Above all, he was a devoted uncle, a loving brother, and a loyal friend whose stories, creativity, and spirit touched the lives of many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick S. Johnston III and Brucie Johnston. He is survived by his sisters, Jenifer Elliott and Mary Bruce Johnston; and by his cherished nieces and nephews: Brucie de Alejo Pitino (Chris), Bert de Alejo (Becca), Gene Taaffe (Rebecca), Olivia Taaffe, and Gloria Gordon.
Rick will be remembered for his adventurous heart, artistic soul, and the warmth and humor he shared so freely with those around him. His legacy lives on in the memories, stories, and love of his family and friends.
A Graveside Service for family will be held at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park, located at 4202 E Lake Ave, Tampa, FL 33610, on March 3, 2026, from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.
