H.J. “Skip” Mathews, age 75, of Odessa, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and daughter. He was the beloved husband of Michele C. for 52 years, a devoted father to Michele A. and Michael, and a proud “Pop-Pop” to Reese. In Skip’s heart, family extended far beyond bloodlines, and he welcomed many into his circle as “bonus kids” and cherished friends, forming a tapestry of bonds that stood the test of time.
Those special “bonus kids” include Angelique (Chris & Logan), Jamal (Crystal & Alex), Natalie, and Charles “Dish.” For over 15 years, they joined Skip in a larger, loving family that celebrated each other’s milestones, offered steady support through life’s trials, and created memories that will endure in the stories told around a cold glass of Miller Lite. He also appreciated his “bonus nephew,” Ron (Kim), being in his life, a sign of the generous, inclusive spirit that defined him.
Skip’s friendships with Jim “Colonial,” Rick “Trickster,” Randy W., Chris S., and Uttiya M. (along with many that predeceased him) were more than synergy; they were the backbone of his days for many decades. These enduring relationships, forged in trust, shared laughter, and mutual support, became a second family to him, offering companionship and a sense of belonging that enriched all who knew him.
Born in Philadelphia on May 24, 1950, Skip carried an entrepreneurial spirit that shaped every chapter of his life. He founded and stewarded several businesses over the years, often in partnership with his Soulmate, consistently guided by a fearless work ethic, integrity, and an abiding desire to help others succeed. His entrepreneurial journey was less about profits and more about empowering people, creating opportunities, mentoring aspiring colleagues, and lifting those around him to dream bigger, work harder, and support one another through every challenge. His professional endeavors were never solitary efforts; they were collaborative enterprises built on trust, mutual respect, and shared goals.
A true mentor in life, Skip especially valued the opportunities to teach and learn with his daughter. They spent countless hours in the field and beyond, forging memories through shared work, hands-on learning, and the joy of discovery. Those moments, whether in the woods, on a job site, over a few dozen oysters and fish dip, or at the kitchen table over a shared project, were the heart of Skip’s legacy: a belief in growth through collaboration, curiosity, and connection.
Among Skip’s greatest joys were time spent in the woods, fishing, and, yes, the Casino—each activity a thread in the fabric of a life lived with curiosity, patience, and gratitude. He also loved getting out on the dance floor with his Soulmate throughout their life, sharing their love and joy while raising their children, and enjoyed always having an “open-door policy” at his house to cook and entertain their friends and family.
An avid hunter, he reveled in the discipline, preparation, and camaraderie that came with hunting alongside his daughter and his “bonus brother” Jim. Those hunts were more than a pastime; they were expressions of his generous, loyal nature, and his deep belief in the bonds of family and friendship. He taught by example, welcoming challenges as opportunities, and celebrating others’ successes as if they were his own.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Skip was a remarkable father and partner. He showed up with unwavering support, a steady hand, and a smart-ass comment and laugh that could brighten the darkest days. His home was more than a residence; it was a welcoming sanctuary where relatives, friends, and “bonus kids” found guidance, encouragement, and a genuine sense of family. He was truly honored to host family from Italy on multiple occasions and bond with them. He believed in the power of community, in the importance of standing by one another, and in the quiet acts of kindness that leave lasting impressions.
Skip leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and loyalty. Those who knew him remember his warmth, his ability to listen and provide appropriate guidance, and his enduring optimism. He possessed a rare gift for making people feel seen and valued, a skill that transformed ordinary moments into lasting memories. His influence extended beyond his family to the many lives he touched through his work, his mentorship, and his hospitality.
In honoring Skip’s wishes, there will be no public funeral service. Instead, the family invites those who wish to pay tribute to consider a donation to The Wounded Warrior Project, a cause close to Skip’s heart and reflective of his enduring commitment to support those who have given much for others.
As we remember Skip, we hold fast to the lasting impressions he left: a man who lived with purpose, who built lasting bridges between people, and who faced every obstacle with grit and determination, while providing laughter and hope. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Michele C., his daughter, Michele A., his extended and bonus family, friends, and the many communities that felt the light of his presence.
