

Joe Chillura Jr., a lifelong advocate for Tampa, renowned architect, and cherished family patriarch, was born on September 4, 1939, and passed away on February 3, 2024. His remarkable career in public service, spanning over 50 years, leaves behind a legacy of unwavering dedication to his community, boundless love for family and friends, and a profound impact on the city he held dear.
Joe's journey in public service began in 1970 when he was elected to a four-year term on the Tampa City Council. He served a remarkable 12-year tenure on the Hillsborough City-County Planning Commission, followed by another eight years on the Hillsborough County Commission from 1990 to 1998.
Throughout his illustrious career, he embodied the values of faith, family, and friendships that were dear to him. He honored his parents, Joe and Josephine, by caring for them throughout their lives. As a loving father to his five children, whom he affectionately referred to as the first and second litter, he shared his wisdom through “Joe-isms” and quotes, often drawing inspiration from Zig Ziglar, past presidents, and favorite musicians. Joe's dedication to family was evident as he gathered them around the family table, cherishing those moments as a top priority.
Joe was married for 60 years to his loving wife, Mary Helen. Together, they raised five children: Tina (Ken Anderson), Joe (Patsy), Conna, Paul, and Vincent (Lisa), and grandchildren, Christopher, Avery, Patton, Max, Hadley, Nash, Audriana, Adaline, and Annalise. He is predeceased by his brother, Phillip, and survived by his sister, Mary Diecidue.
Beyond his roles as a devoted family man, Joe was an advocate for education, hard work, and innovation. He was a creative visionary with a passion for modern architecture, especially designs that harmonized with nature. His love for trees and respect for nature was profound, symbolizing his commitment to nurturing communities. Joe often found wisdom in nature, drawing inspiration from the majestic Bald Eagle and its symbolism of unity.
In addition to his architectural talents, Joe was a prolific artist, often sketching on napkins and any available surface when inspired by an idea. His witty and dry sense of humor was a testament to his deep passion and love for others, always bringing a chuckle to those fortunate enough to know him.
Joe made a profound difference in the lives of his family and friends, embodying the values of his faith throughout his extraordinary journey. His impact on Tampa will resonate for generations to come.
A funeral Mass to celebrate Joe’s remarkable life will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Christ the King Church, followed by a celebration of life event at Tampa Armature Works Waterfront Park, located adjacent to Joe Chillura's Riverwalk oak tree from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The family will receive family and friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm before the memorial mass.
