Born on April 13th 1955, in Buffalo, New York, to the late Suzanne Waterman and Jonathan Molea. He was a distinguished medical doctor, specializing in general surgery, psychoanalysis, and the treatment of addiction and chronic pain. His academic achievements were extensive, including studies at the University at Buffalo (Class of 1986), medical training in Quenca, Ecuador, and a surgical residency at Temple University (Class of 1995). He continued advanced training in psychoanalysis, addiction medicine, and psychotherapy through institutions such as the Tampa Bay Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies and the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
Dr. Molea was a proud Army veteran, having served as a medic and flight surgeon. He was also the Executive Director of a specialized addiction treatment center for professionals in Tampa, Florida. In addition to his medical career, he was the author of the novel Duck Blood Soup, a lover of books and movies, jazz music, airplanes, and sports. A natural storyteller and humorist, he had the rare gift of making everyone-especially his children-laugh. He could speak to anyone, help anyone, and heal in more ways than one.
Above all, Joseph was most proud to be a father. His greatest joy in life came from raising his children, Maxwell, Abbegail, and Sophia, who will always remember him for his love, wit, and wisdom.
He is survived by his children, Maxwell, Abbegail, and Sophia; Heidi Lenner-Molea, the mother of his children, his brother, William “Bill” Molea, his devoted friend, Lori Koletic and his beloved dog, Luie.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Suzanne Waterman and Jonathan Molea.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Blount & Curry Life Event Center, 605 S MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL 33609. A luncheon will follow.
