Born and raised in Tampa, Joe showed an early gift for athletics. As a child, he began competing and quickly stood out as a natural in the swimming pool, competing at the national level, setting state and national records. Many of his records remained unbeaten and were retired after 25 years. Those early years helped shape his discipline, focus, and competitive spirit—traits that stayed with him throughout his life.
Joe later attended Jesuit High School, where he continued to excel as a student-athlete and built the toughness and work ethic he became known for. He went on to attend the University of Florida, proudly playing football for the Gators.
At Florida, Joe was part of the offensive line known as “The Family,” a nickname that reflected how closely that group played and lived together. As an offensive lineman, Joe was respected for his strength, grit, and reliability. The lessons he learned there—showing up for others, doing the hard work, and putting the group first—guided him long after football ended.
In his professional life, Joe worked as a general contractor and was the proud owner of the Tahitian Inn, a longtime Tampa landmark. He cared deeply about his work and preserving the character of the hotel. People knew him as someone who did things the right way and treated others with fairness and respect.
More than anything, Joe was a family man. His children were his greatest pride, and he cared deeply for the people around him. He had a big heart and showed up when it mattered—always there for his family and friends. Joe will be remembered for the way he treated people, with loyalty and care, whether it was his team, his work, his hometown, or most of all, his family.
Joe is survived by his children, Joey Pupello Jr. (Kristen), Kyle Pupello, Trent Pupello, and Paige Alfonso (Nik); his sister, Nancy Pupello Pappas (Louis); and his grandchildren, Evelyn Pupello and Anastasia Alfonso.
A service celebrating Joe’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 13th at 2:00 p.m. at Christ the King Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Tampa Bay.
