I never met him, but on one of my trips to the United States, I took a photo of the place where his name is inscribed in the Memorial Museum. I would like to express my condolences to his family and friends.

It was nice seeing you two weeks ago.  I was hesitant to post a funny story about Lou during this most solemn time.  However, you made a great point that we all want to remember and enjoy our great memories of Lou.  So, at your request, the legendary poinsettia story follows:  
Leadership is a process in which an individual influences others.  Lou, even as a young lieutenant, was a true leader and master influencer.  He keenly demonstrated those skills in the midst of a 1986 New Year's Eve celebration.  And that particular leadership episode involved poinsettias. 
Lou noticed, a little after midnight / New Year's Eve at the Kadena Air Base Officer's Club, a Christmas tree constructed of poinsettias.  Somehow the discussion of passive influence came up.  Could people, who would otherwise simply walk past the decoration, be passively stimulated to do something different?  The experiment was quickly planned and executed.
We backed my van up to the door, opened the hatch, and placed one poinsettia in the back.  I don't remember the degree to which we started the stimulation.  Perhaps we mentioned once-or-twice that someone said they were giving the poinsettias away.  I just don't remember. 
I do remember, however, the experiment produced results well beyond our expectations.  Dozens of partiers noticed the poinsettia in the van.  Word traveled like wildfire.  Many removed poinsettias from the display.  The well-designed Christmas tree decoration was reduced to poinsettia-rubble in just a few moments.
Kadena Air Base, in those days, was a small town.  And forgetting about the poinsettia in the back of the van was a bad idea.  Someone noticed, in a parking lot, the overturned pot and plant.  A photo surfaced.  The organization, which had planned to use the poinsettias for a fund-raising event, was furious.  Words like van full of poinsettias were voiced.  
Lou was calm and collective.  He smartly chose to preemptively report the incident to the squadron commander.  Bad news, Lou said, is always better coming from inside versus outside. I agreed.  And then it was decided the same technique should be used with the base leadership.  And off two lieutenants went to voluntarily report the incident to the senior ranking officer.  
We were mildly scolded for our experiment.  And the leadership was able to advise the poinsettia-owning organization that the culprits had been caught.  But the story did not end there. 
First, it was indisputable that we indeed took one poinsettia.  That wrong had to be righted.  And, three-weeks after the incident, we tried to rectify the issue with the club manager.  He said many poinsettias disappeared that night, the poinsettia caper was old news, and we should not worry about it.  That simply, from an ethical perspective, failed to set well with Lou or me.  When pressed, the annoyed club manager said to pay $1.00.  I still have the receipt.  
Second, almost two-decades later, Lou told me the poinsettia escapade had surfaced again in his professional life.  He was briefing, as a senior field-grade officer, a high-ranking officer on a matter.  Lou said the high-ranking officer interrupted him, paused, thought a bit, and then asked him if he was one of the two lieutenants involved in the legendary poinsettia incident.  
Lou was a great leader.  He was motivational, intelligent, inspirational, and indeed charismatic.  He made a huge difference in lives and organizations.  The poinsettia episode remains part of his leadership legacy.

Rest in Peace, Sir. It was a pleasure to know and work with you.

May Lou's soul rest in peace, and may Perpetual Light shine upon him forever.  Rest in peace old brother.

Val, Gina, and Lisa,

   Lori and I want to pass on our deepest sympathies on the loss of your husband and father.  I have only the fondest of memories of Lou and our time together at the Survival School. He was a great commander, mentor, and most of all, friend. 
   It is obvious how much Lou meant to people around him. He touched so many lives and I was one of them.  I am a better person for having known him for sure!
   May God bless you all and give you opportunities to make life more meaningful for others just as Lou did.

I have tried to find the words several times- but they have failed me. Val, Gina and Lisa...I know that a light has gone from your life- but pray that the illumination his love and laughter brought you will continue to glow within your hearts for a lifetime. 
All of my memories of Lou involved his love for you and flying...he lived life full out- and his enthusiasm for it was infectious. I went through photos of our time in FL together - and found several of him- always in the middle of a group, hands in mid-air (obviously telling a flying story!) and the faces around him were smiling and laughing. That is what I remember the most about Lou- and will carry with me- his love of life and his laughter. I know heaven is a brighter place with his presence- but we will miss him here until we meet again. Val, your strength and faith has been a beautiful example to all of us throughout this...I love you my friend and am praying for comfort for you and the girls...

I've tried to right this a hundred times, but nothing ever felt right. So I will just say how grateful I am to have had you in my life. Thank you for all of the memories and for treating me like part of the Capo Clan. I am forever thankful to have experienced your love, humor, kindness, and sense of adventure.

You were someone my father looked up to in every aspect of life. He's been telling many stories of you two lately, I know he truly cherished each of those times. You and your family extended such amazing love and support through his deployment years ago and it's something we all hold near and dear to our hearts. Our hearts ache for your family, but know you will always be watching over them from heaven. Rest in peace Lou.

So long, dear Brother.  It was an honor knowing and working with you, among great men on noble cause...

"Capo" and I lived together in Sarajevo for about 8 months. I couldn't have had a better Ranger buddy, leader, friend and trainer. Miss shooting guns with you Lou...he had my respect always... He made me go to Church(when I needed to) and he was always there when I needed him. Miss you much Lou, a great SOF warrior!

Denise and I remember the fun we had going through scuba class with Lou and Jeff Smith. You probably remember that Lou took the class in part to help overcome his fear of the water.  That made him very interesting to go through class with.  It was great fun and more fun to dive with him after.  All our thoughts with you and the girls.

Lisa and I were rocked by Lou's passing.  We've been reading the stories and thinking of him since we heard.  The world has many people, some more colorful than others, Lou was in a class of his own -- vivid.  His passing leaves the world a lot less colorful.  We'll all miss his humor and insight. Lou was always ready with both an opinion and a story - inevitably humorous, often with a twist.  I don't know why the Lord took him now -- I suppose he must have a plan.  (if not, I'm certain Lou is working on one, all while telling stories and keeping everyone in stitches) I do know that we'll miss him.  He was our friend.

Lou was a great guy and it was a blessing to be his friend.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and the girls.

Mr. Caporicci, as I called him, was a fantastic godfather. I remember the last time I saw him was my last spring break. He asked me how school was going, and I think he could sense that perhaps I wasn't getting everything out of my experience. He gave me the advice to join a fraternity, he preached about how important brotherhood could be. Though I never joined a fraternity, that simple conversation stuck with me. He was my godfather, he was looking out for me, and he wanted what was best for me in this world. I took that lesson to heart and have sought and will continue to seek those strong brotherhood ties that he wanted for me and that I know he and my father had. He was a great man, someone I was proud to have as both a godfather and a role model. I know he will always be looking out for me, and I know that the impact he has had on me will never be lost.

Lou Caporicci was a great and loyal man. He was one of the best representatives of the Pavelow folks in the Joint Community, always finishing any of his presentations with "Pavelow Leads," matching the Rangers or any others with his own slogan. There were some all Army missions which were briefed with Lou as the SOCCENT or SOCPAC staffer acting as MC or moderator. When the full briefing concluded, Lou always announced the conclusion with "Pavelow leads" often to the consternation of some of the Army helicopter pilots. He never backed down from this stance and when questioned would ask others if they would omit "Rangers lead the way" or NSDQ from their presentations. When they answered, he told them that he had no less pride than they, so they had no case. He always made it stick. Pavelow Leads.

We only met Lou and Val a short while ago on the pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We seemed to hit it off and shared common interests in conversation over the 8 days. The four of us were on the "blue bus" and as I have looked back at some of our pictures (and pictures that others have shared in a drop box) I was struck by how many times we shared a meal at the same table. Good conversation was shared over good wine night after night. We sat near each other often on the bus and reflected on many things, both from the trip and our past. Bob and Lou were quite proud of their moustaches (but Lou clearly won hands down.) We will always fondly remember our shared experiences, especially those from this wonderful trip. His years of service to country were unparalleled to any we have known in quite some time. Val, you will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. We are so sorry for the loss of Lou. We have really fond memories of our time together in England. We know he is smiling down on you and will for ever keep and eye on you.

I loved flying with Capo, but my favorite story was going to dinner in Brindisi, Italy. We figured a short dinner with antipasti and pasta, but Lou had something else in mind. 

He disappeared to talk to the owner and then the feast arrived! We sat for almost three hours as they brought out everything on the menu. All kinds of appetizers, specialties, etc. And it just kept coming. 

Capo sure knew how to take care of his troops! Good Bless him and his family!

I met Lou during our H-3 days in the mid-80's where he, West Kasper and I were all stationed in the Pacific and we were all wild copilots.  I knew he was going to be a great friend from the moment I met him because he was dedicated to Val, loved flying and was absolutely hilarious.  I was flying one of our helicopters down to the Philippines for a repaint and we had to spend a couple days in Okinawa where Lou and West were stationed.  It was a hot day in Summer, so naturally we decided to go to the beach.  Of course none of us wore suntan lotion, and after 5+ hours of having an absolutely wonderful time, we were all lobsters.  But we didn't care until the next day when we all had to go flying with all our flight gear for a 9-hour flight.  Very painful, but none of us uttered a word to each other for years.  To be honest, we had too much fun to worry about a little pain...it was the friendship that counted.
Lou and I had often dreamed of opening a business together...flying of course.  I just think we clicked like no other friend I've ever had.  The nice part was Val and Sharon had the same relationship.  So, to me, it was truly a gift and I cherished every minute.  I will miss him greatly.  He was a great Pavelow warrior, a loving husband and father, and a wonderful person.  So I want to honor his memory by striving to be like him and to stay close to Val and the kids.  He is in the hands of God and teaching the Angels how to fly.  Rest in peace my dear friend.

Val, Lisa and Gina,  Lou was truly a great man, larger than life.  He was so quick witted and funny!  So many wonderful memories, he was there the day We found out I was pregnant with Maggie,.   Our fun trip to disneyworld with the Poole's.  Lou and I were riding in one car on splash mountain, throwing water on Suzanne and  Mike Poole, when a talking rock yelled at us to keep our hands in the boat!

He was so excited when Lisa was born.  I remember Lisa playing dress up and Lou putting on his mess dress to pose with her.  Then baby number two, Gina.  He loved his girls vey much.  
 I remember Val's 30th birthday, and Lou had no plans.   Suzanne and I called him at work, said we would babysit the girls.  He needed to make special plans.  Smart man, Lou took our advice and made arrangements.   When he dropped off the kids with us, he brought us both flowers, and thanked us for saving his behind!!!  

Lou, the Godfather!   I remember him holding Harris when he come for the  christening.   He was the baby whisperer, rocking him and keeping him happy!  We could not have chosen better godparents for Harris. 

I remember in England, having you guys over for supper one night. Lou said, dinner was so good it doesn't need any hot sauce.   A lovely compliment, I thought!   Punting down the Cambs with Lou punting your boat, and Mike ours.  Soooo relaxing for Val and I, so much work for Lou and Mike!

So many happy memories of Lou, he worked hard, and played hard.  Love to all of you, and keep laughing when you think of him

Heather and I met Lou and Val while we served together in J9 at USSOCOM in Tampa from 2008-2011. Lou was a professional Air Force Officer, who got business done but kept us all laughing and happy doing it. His deep love of service to our Service Members and Nation is only surpassed by his unending love for Val and his girls. You will be missed my friend. See you on the high ground when we meet again.

     We have truly lost a great man from the planet.  I first met Lou upon arriving at the Air Force Academy for basic training.  I was full of fear and self-doubt, lacking self confidence, and wondering how I was to survive.  Upon meeting Lou, whose confidence, intelligence and 'anything is possible' attitude was contagious, my doubts were erased and we bonded as a high achieving , fun loving group.  Lou was always willing to go for it  and/or take one for the team, often serving as the ' ____screen' so that the more meek of us could last another day.   
     Lou kept his  high achieving , fun loving ways throughout our tenure at the Air Force Academy, eventually serving as the First Group Honor Representative,  where he never lost sight of who his friends and classmates were and how important it was that we were all included and full participants in the journey and mission together-attributes that would go on to serve him and all he met extremely well in his Air Force Career.  
     While mourning Lou, keep in mind he led an incredible life and raised an amazing family, and everyone he met was enriched by his quick wit and commitment to service, both in himself and those around him.

To Val, the girls and Lou's family and friends...and, of course, to you Lou.

Lou and I first met in 1988 when we became "stick-buddies" in H-53 flight training.  What immediately impressed me and has continued to do so for the almost 30 years that I knew him was Lou's natural leadership. Specifically, I would note his affability, his assertiveness, his vision and his courage.  Lou was one of those guys who commanded a room.  Whenever he walked in -- to any place or any situation -- you knew Lou was there.  This served him well during his military career and, I'm assuming, during his post-military career as well.  And, of course, he was a great fan of rock music and of motorsports (as am I) so we had much in common!

As I said, Lou and I became fast friends and "teammates" in transition flight school.  Since he was a year senior to me (and MUCH more worldly!), he assumed a sort of lead role in our team.  While we conducted many activities outside of work together (skiing, concert going [with Val!], etc), what I remember most vividly, in our eagerly friendship, was Lou's courage...most notably his moral courage.  Yes, we eventually went to several wars together and he most certainly had physical courage...but it was his moral courage that really made the lasting impression.  Lou was also one of those for whom "things" did not necessarily come easily.  But, Lou would never be denied the things he was passionate about; and, I was witness to, on more than several occasions, his engagement with whomever "to right a wrong".  

One example:  we were to take our first check ride in the -53 during the winter of 88.  The instructors were keen to get Lou and me evaluated before the President's Day long weekend.  The problem was, we hadn't had our required academics and Lou smelled trouble.  Somewhat of a conspiracy theorist, Lou concluded he and I were being set up to fail.  Over my objection to let it be, that everything would work out...Lou confronted our instructors, up through several layers of the chain of command to demand that we be allowed to complete our prerequisites before taking the check ride.  Even if this meant taking the check ride after the break.  This action ticked off a lot of leadership, but since he was theoretically correct, they acquiesced...for the time being!  When it came time, legitimately, for our check ride, the day was a snowy one.  In fact, we were in blizzard conditions.  Usually, this type of weather would drive a cancellation and re-schedule.  But, because we had created a stir the week before, we were clearly in "the penalty box".  We were given a 4 hour "oral exam" (focused quite a bit on Lou) and when the weather cleared (barely) we then went to fly.  We got airborne but had to stay in holding as the weather wasn't good enough to conduct any landing operations.  The instructor pilot went back to oral quizzing Lou (who was in the seat flying) for several more hours.  Then, when we landed we resumed our oral.  Well, we eventually passed...and frankly, the instructor corps were so impressed with our (mostly Lou's) knowledge and ability to "weather the storm" wrought by the instructors on us two rabble-rousers that we won them over.  The rest of our flight training experience was marked by the instructors praising our abilities.  Our Team Lou-Brad approach wasn't particularly easy, but we passed the test with flying colors!

Another:  I remember Lou leading a 2-ship Pave Low helicopter Direct Action mission to close the 1993 1st SOW Operational Readiness Inspection (I was aircraft commander for Chalk 2).  As this was the culminating event, Lou was briefing our Wing Commander, the ORI Inspectors of course, and all the associated ground force leadership.  Our time-on-target standard for Pave Low in those days was plus or minus 30 seconds.  When Lou briefed the TOT he stated..."we will land at the Landing Zone plus or minus zero seconds" -- in other words, on the hack!  Needless-to-say, that was a gutsy call to make in front of the Inspection team, but I'll be darned if we didn't nail the TOT to the second!  That was Lou...assertive and courageous.  

As I said, Lou was one who usually chose the road less traveled...and not the easiest road!  When it was time in Lou's mind, shortly after making Major, to head to an upwardly mobile staff position, the jobs offered him did not suffice.  Lou decided to carve his own path.  He made an appointment directly with the commander of Special Operations Command, Central Command...a notoriously intimidating Brigadier General to state his case for why this general should hire him.  In those days, we had not paved the path for fliers to go to a Theater Special Ops Command.  Lou, literally, was inventing the way!  Well, he got hired (I can only imagine how that interview went!), worked his tail off for several years and in the process, knocked down the door for all Air Commandos that followed.  It is now fairly common place for us to get this type of assignment when we reach our staff officer time.

I could tell many stories of Lou's combat exploits but assume that others will cover this.  Again, Lou had physical courage in abundance.  He led, always, from the front even if it meant re-routing C-141 aircraft to the sounds of battle to ensure he was there!

One of the last times our paths crossed while we were both on active duty together took place as I had just taken over command of the Special Ops Group in England.  Lou was getting ready to leave his position as a staff officer in this Group's higher headquarters.  The situation I inherited was one in which the relationship between the Group and Headquarters was particularly prickly.  Lou, recognizing that a new and fresh start was desperately needed, connected me with the one person on the HQ staff that I needed to know and get along with!  It was his thought that this would be a decisive "game-changer" in how these units interacted and got the mission done.  Lou could not have been more right.  I hit it off with this officer and my command reaped successes for my entire tour and years beyond...Lou's assertiveness, vision etc on ample display. 

So, when I think of Lou, I think of leadership.  But, even more so, I'll remember his affability and his zest for life.  As I said already, Lou was ALWAYS the life of the party, the center of attention, the smartest guy in the room and the one you could count on to have the moral courage to have your back if you were struggling.  While Lou and I have only occasionally crossed paths since he retired, when we did...it was like no time had ever passed!  We were right back to being trouble-making Lieutenants! Lou was a saber-bearer at my wedding -- and, yes, he was the saber-bearer who stopped Dawna on our way from the alter to swat her on the fanny -- for good luck!

This is the Lou I'll always remember...a leader, a presence, a friend.  

Here's a toast to you, Lou Caporicci, as you've slipped the surlies and reached out to touch the face of God!  Pave Low Leads and Steering to One!

Lou and Kevin were larger than life iconic personalities. Two guys you could depend on no matter what was going down. Dare I say they embodied what was truly great about those 4 years spent in Colorado so long ago. They will be missed.

Lou is family. He has been a part of mine and Kevin's life from almost the beginning of our relationship and has been a part of our children's life from the start. He was nicknamed "Uncle Buck" by us and we loved him so. Lou and Kevin's friendship brought our families together and we have blessed to have been a part of the Caporicci family.
We are sad. We are sad for Val, Lisa and Gina and we are sad to have lost such a gentle, wise, loving, supportive and caring man who has been so important to us all.
Rest in peace Lou. You are loved and you are missed.

Ricard and I moved to Tampa 5 years ago. My Husband Ricard was very happy to hear that Lou and Kevin also lived in the Tampa area. The three couples would meet up at one of Lou's or Kevin's favorite Restaurants for dinner. We would all talk for hours, the guys would talk and laugh about all their adventures at the United States Air Force Academy Class of 83'. They were all three at the Prep School together up on the Hill. We also had the guys over to watch the USAFA Falcons play some Football. My favorite memory of Lou probably will be when we went out to dinner at PF Chang's.  I taught Lou how to take a Selfie with a Selfie Stick. WE all laughed that night until it hurt. Another great Memory is when I invited Ricard and I to come out to Lou's  home and we spent the day with Val and Lou watching the Gasparilla Parade. A wonderful day was spent with Great Friends.  Lou you are such a Blessing and will be missed by many!

I was very saddened and shocked to hear the the news about Lou.  I remember meeting Lou Caporicci when I first came to the 20th SOS.  He made a point to introduce himself and welcome me to the organization, but I came to realize that that was just Lou's way.  

He was a true special ops warrior and professionals professional.  It was an honor to fly with him, work beside him, serve our country together, and call him my brother!  "Pavelow Leads!"

Rest in Peace my Friend!  You will be fondly remembered and always missed.  May God have his guiding hands upon Val and the family during this time of great loss and sorrow.  God Bless You!!

I met then Col Lou "Capo" Caporicci when I was assigned to PACOM-SOCPAC in 2006.  He was the then the SOJ3 Director and just a great boss to work for.  He was a very laid back persona, however, he was very sharp and smart and knew how to get optimum performance out of folks to make the mission happen while motivating and mentoring you.  On a personal note, we both shared civilian flying as a hobby and started working on our civilian ratings.  When he became the Deputy Commander for SOCPAC, I moved into the front office to work for then MG Fridovich (and later MG Cambria) as his exec where we would work very closely in support of the Commander.  Off duty, we flew multiple sorties to enjoy the sights of Hawaii and work on our ratings.  Later, after much persuasion, I convinced Capo to join Civil Air Patrol (CAP) with me so that we could give back to the Air Force cadets while continuing to fly and learn something new.  It is there where we would support the Tsunami Watch/Patrols and Search and Rescue mission for CAP.    

We flew many CAP missions together in addition to our regular flying.  I recall he kept it very professional although we became very familiar with our flying habits/skillset.  Each mission he would always ask about career plans and take the opportunity to mentor on a professional level and sometimes on a spiritual level.  As Val would say, Capo was a righteous man and he would lower his guard if he was comfortable around you and open up about Family, Career, and God.  He was very proud of his girls and would light up about his wife Val and the life/family they made together.  I remember he would help me as a new father/parent figure in my new trials in learning how to be a good husband, father and military officer.  

One of my funniest moments with Capo was watching him try to pronounce Hawaiian words.  When it was my turn to fly, he would do the radios.  I recall we were going to an airfield called Kalaeloa Airport (pronounced Ka-Lie-ah-low-ah) aka--John Rogers Airport, formerly Barber's Point NAS.  I took off and after clearing from Honolulu airspace, Capo contacted Departure Control:  

Capo: "Departure, CAP Flight20 request" 
Departure:  "Go Ahead"
Capo:  Request direct "Kala ah lu ah (mumble mumble...)"  
Departure:  "Say again?"
Capo:  Same thing, this time worse, total mispronunciation.
**Then a very long paus ensued...
Capo:  "Request direct Barbers Point"
Departure: [I believe now having some fun] "There is no Barber's Point... Do you want to go to Kailua (Kie-Loo-ah) or Kalaeloa...one is at 5 miles in front of you, the other is 4 miles to your left...I don't care...just tell me where you want to go."

Capo became (hysterically) irate at the controller and started talking on intercom (to me only) in true Italian accent inside the plane--"who does this guy think he is...why is he making fun of my pronunciation...why do you Hawaiian's have such hard words to pronounce..."  I couldn't stop laughing and quickly got on the radio during his "venting" and stated, "request present position direct Kalaeloa"  Capo said, I give up, you Hawaiians...you got the radios DQ".  I laughed the whole flight and called him a "Training--Brah" because his Italian-Pigin English Accent was hysterical.  

Fast forward--I am grateful that Capo and I continued to keep in touch after our time at SOCPAC.  Most recently, he attended my retirement from the Air Force on 12 Feb 2016 which I am again grateful to have seen him one last time--Truly blessed to call him friend after all these years; he was a great aviator, officer and friend to many to include my family.  His untimely death haunts me but I am at peace knowing he left this life doing what he loved equally to his family--flying.  We will miss him dearly, RIP Capo...you will be missed!  --Dennis, Diana, Ian and Abigail King

Such jarring and saddening news this month, to lose a larger-than-life guy who brought such passion to everything he did.  Lou is a memorable part of every endeavor where we crossed paths--from USAFA and our first assignments at Kadena & the 33rd, to Air Force wargaming much more recently.  Val, Karen and I are so sorry, our prayers are with you and your family.

It was so wonderful to be able to spend a life-changing week with Lou and Val in the Holy Land in February. We shared several emotional, spiritual moments on that trip. And he was always so positive and encouraging to me and was a ton of fun to be around. I was shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. Saddened to hear of Lou's passing. May his family find peace and comfort.

Darlene and I were shocked and saddened when we learned of Lou's sudden passing.  We dusted off some photo albums (1985-1988) this weekend and noted the many photos of Lou (and Val) at assorted events.  One of our fondest memories was the 1985 Italian Christmas dinner Lou and Val hosted at their house on Okinawa.  We were new to the island and still in culture shock.  Lou was so considerate that day to Rick and Sonja Ragaller, Mark and Linda Balzer, Clay and Angie Griswold, Jeff and Sandy Smith, Darlene, and me.  Other favorite memories center on flying with Lou throughout Okinawa, Korea, and the Philippines.  He was a skilled pilot who always shared his talent and techniques.  May God bless and comfort you and your entire family.

When I first arrived at the 20th SOS in the mid-90s, Lou was one of who I like to call, "The Untouchables", the fellas in Stan/Eval that everyone revered and respected.  Unfortunately I never got to know him while I was there.  But after moving on to England, I was given the job of Group Flight Safety Officer and Lou was my boss.  Our desks sat back-to-back so we looked directly at each other on a daily basis.  I'll admit to being intimidating at first, his reputation was legendary, I wasn't in fear of him rather whether I could meet his expectations as a junior officer on his team.  I truly wanted to impress him.  I realized very quickly that he was a unique, genuine, and amazing leader and mentor.  

I listened to his stories and advice intently and tried my best to take in all of his wisdom and insight.  He had a zeal for his career and his life that was infectious to everyone around him, I believe that is why there are so many fond memories of him among his colleagues.  

Those several years serving with him in England were very memorable, he taught me a tremendous amount.  I consider him a colleague but never a peer because I could never have reached his level of professionalism and dedication.

I was truly stunned when I heard of his loss, in a fog for several days and took the time to re-evaluate my own life once more.  That, from someone who knew him only a short time, illustrates how great a man Lou was.  God bless him and his family.

It was my honor to serve under Colonel Caporicci in Hawaii at the Special Operations Command Pacific. He was a well respected and excellent leader. I appreciated his support in my job as the Pubic Affairs Officer, and his quick humor always made me laugh. Rest in Peace, Sir. This world will not be the same without you, but I look forward to seeing you again in Heaven.

Thru all the years, I can honestly say I never met anyone else like you. I still remember that we were always known as the Blues Brothers, and to this day can't believe we didn't get into more trouble than we did. Even thou I never kept in touch, I doubt a week went by that something didn't remind me of you for all these years.
The crazy times we had together in all those backwater countries we played in will never be forgotten. You were a good man, and I hope you rest well my friend.

Sue and I were shocked and saddened to learn of Lou's tragic passing and offer our condolences; you are in our thoughts and prayers.  
I served with Lou at Hurlburt, flew a couple of combat missions with him in Panama, was his classmate in the War College, and in the small world of Special Operations, we often ran into each other at various exercises and other events throughout the years.  I have many memories of the times that we spent togetherand while I may not be able to recall the specific details, I have an overwhelming recollection of Lou always making me laugh.  His rapier sharp wit, effusive, some might say intentionally extravagant, vocabulary, and overall passion made him stand out as one of the more memorable personalities in the cast of characters who made up the Pave Low community.  
He will be missed greatly by all who were fortunate enough to have known him, but he will not be forgotten.

May God Bless and Grace my Air Force brother, Lou. I will forever remember our trials and tribulations together in the far reaches of our world, we persevered through brotherhood and God's Grace. You were and are an inspiration, your guidance set me on the correct path. I will miss you, but am rejoiced knowing you are in the warm embrace of our Lord.

Val, Lisa, and Gina I am sorry for your loss.  All of us that knew Lou and hold his memory dear know a wonderful light has gone from your lives.  Lou was a great man, he will be missed by many and we are richer for the time we spent together.

We're Barbarians, WE EAT ROCKS!!!

When I heard that my lifelong friend Sweet Lou "Capo" Caporicci (and good friend and zoomie Kevin Carreno) died in a plane crash I was saddened and shocked. My sincere condolences and offer of support to Val and the girls. . .

Lou had this knack for getting himself out of any predicament, including ones he created himself, so I just couldn't believe what happened. Though I have dozens of stories about Lou, let me share one, my oldest story, that I think will provide a good example of his key attributes: His sense of humor, quick wit, and clear thinking under pressure. 
 
In the summer of 1979, Lou, Kevin, and I and 1497 other teenagers found ourselves in rather unpleasant surroundings as we tried to navigate the challenges of Basic Cadet Training at the US Air Force Academy.  Assigned to B Squadron, "The Barbarians," Lou, or someone close to him, came up with the idea to add "We Eat Rocks" to the end of every "Barbarian" cheer or chant. If Lou didn't invent the chant he was at least its greatest proponent, and you could pick out his booming voice with that distinctive Italian accent over dozens of other voices as we yelled the chant for any reason.  One day Lou and I and a few classmates arrived late to the noon meal.  An upperclassman was unhappy with this development and voiced his displeasure by shouting at Lou and I from a distance of 2 to 3 inches from our faces.  When he finally stopped to take a breath, we yelled, "BARBARIANS SIR, WE EAT ROCKS!!" At that point, Lou removed an actual rock from his pants pocket and put it in his mouth.  The upperclassman was rendered completely speechless and stood sputtering as we hustled to join the other Barbarians for an, ahem, leisurely and filling lunch, ahem.  

After the summer Lou went to 3rd Squadron, I think, and I went to 15 Squadron but we were reunited for our Junior and Senior years in 7th Squadron. There we shared much merriment as we battled our evil (West Point exchange) Army AOC and military discipline in general.
Fast forward 23 years past all of these stories about our formative years at USAFA (Val is in some of these stories but she is already fully formed for the most part) to another great time together flying in the Aero Club at Air War College.

Val,  I am so sorry.  What a terrible tragedy.  When I showed up at the SERE school,  I knew I would have someone I could lean on as the new guy.  There are many fond memories as we closed the office doors, put on our mess dress uniforms, and then met up for a drink before heading to another ALS graduation.  We talked of the past and of what the future might bring. Lou always lead from the front, whether it was jumping out of a helicopter or getting us to the graduation on time.  Those who remember, Lou drove the SHO like he was flying a PAVE.  You and he are always welcome in the  SERE fire circle.  May God provide you and the girls comfort during this difficult time.

Rest in Peace Colonel. Thank you for your service and concern for your men, your wonderful sense of humor and your consistent and steadfast leadership. May god receive you into his arms and may your family be blessed.

Val, few realize the sacrifice a man and his family make when they serve our country. Thank you for yours and may you and your family find peace in this time of grief. Lou was a great family man and patriot taken too soon. God Bless

Val, I trust God is comforting you and your family as only He can. Lou and I were classmates at the Academy and, while we were more acquaintances than close friends, every time we saw each other or stopped to talk, he inevitably made me laugh- that will always be my memory of "Louie."

I am so very sorry for your lose of your wonderful husband Lou. I am still in shock and heart broken for all of you. I am blessed to have grown up with the Caporicci family in Hopewell Jct. Rita became my best friend in the neighborhood and to this day we are still best friends. I have many memories at the house on Angie Drive. The Caporicci's treated me like family including Louis. Rita and I spent many days playing silly games in her basement and outside. I remember Rita and I use to play "The Borrowers" in her basement, setting up pillows and crawling under them as it was our house. It was from a movie about little people. I remember Louis just looking at us like we were just so weird! I love the Cap's like family so losing one is hitting me hard and I can only imagine how you are doing and your girls. I am thankful that you and Lou got to have that magical trip recently together. Prayers will continue to come your way. Thinking of you everyday.

From the first day I met him in 1972 (?) when we were children until today, I've never met a more focused, driven person. I think he told me he wanted to learn to fly that early in our lives. Just a solid, hard working smart as all heck guy whom I admired and looked up to as a kid. I'm so sorry for your loss. He is soaring with the angels now.

My thoughts and prayers to everyone touched by this absolute tragedy. Sweet Lou will always be in my heart.  His warm and gentle spirit coupled with his natural sense of humor always brightened up my day and brought a smile to my face. Gone from this earth, but certainly will never be forgotten.  Godspeed, Lou and Kevin.

Where do I begin, Val? As his younger sister, I knew Lou literally my entire life. So many stories from our childhood.. I love that so many others who got to know him after he left home for the Academy are helping to fill in some gaps. I told Lou after he retired that he really needed to write a book some day, once some of his missions became declassified. How awesome that his many friends and fellow service brothers, as well as family, can help you piece together the story of Lou's remarkable life right here. When I think of our childhood, I remember so clearly all those trips we had to take to the Stormville Air Field in NY to watch air shows and paratroopers in order to satisfy Lou's lifelong dream of being in the air with those pilots and jumpers. His bedroom was filled with model airplanes, some built from kits and others painstakingly handmade from balsa wood scraps that he collected. Having his closest childhood buddy Joey living two doors down from us only fueled Lou's dreams, because Joey and his dad flew remote control airplanes in their backyard.  Lou was always right there with them, where he received his first "flying lessons". How many people can say they truly got to live out their dream? Lou did, and he was full of gratitude for that. He had such a deep appreciation for all of the blessings in his life, with you and your girls topping that list, Val. And he blessed us all with his many gifts and wide open heart in these last months. God had truly perfected Lou for his Heavenly home, and we will try to follow his example of unconditional love and selfless service to others even as we miss his presence here with us. Saint Louis is so proud of you, Lisa and Gina and will continue to watch over you forever, Val. We love you all so much!

Tom and I feel so blessed to of spent Christmas with you and getting to know the two of you.  There are special memories that will remain forever. A very Merry Christmas for us all.  Lots of family talks and fun.  We will miss Lou, his smile and wit and  his amazing mustache.

First and foremost, deepest condolences Val & Family. We've lost a great friend and warrior, and a unique character. It's crushing. Stories? Too many to list here, so I'll throw just one out. Initial weeks of Desert Shield in the MABCO Village. It was so stinking hot, it was beyond hot, and the fine dust was constantly in your hair and ears. Lou would take showers in his flight suit. My initial reaction, "what the heck are you doing?" But it actually made sense because it flushed alot of the dust out of the flight suit and provided a cooling effect as it dried. Such a character.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.  Fond memories of being classmates at the Academy, but even more special was the year Lou spent in Wheeling a few years ago as a business consultant.  We so enjoyed spending time with him and having him as part of the family.  His Wheeling family and friends were sad to see him go when the contract ended.  We all are heartbroken now.  He touched our lives in such a special way and will never ever be forgotten.

Val, Lou and I grew up like brothers as he was only 2 years my junior. He was so trusting of me even in our early years in Astoria Queens. We had recently gone to Palisades Amusement Park in NJ when were only 8 and 6 years old. The Trip to the Moon ride left both us imagining having that ride in our back yard. I think back at how excited he was to get the first ride. I tied him into a small child's rocking chair attached to a clothes line we had running out from the wall near the basement door to a metal pole in the back yard. I remember pulling the close line and away he traveled until he got to the middle of the back yard where the rope let loose and down came Lou. He laughed the whole time until we both got our deserved punishments. We never forgot the adventure and I swear even at 6 years old he wanted to soar albeit in a child's rocking chair rigged by his 10 year old uncle. I continue to love him and I know he is waiting for me for when its my time to be called by the Lord.

I thought Lou was one of the smartest, funniest, and most charismatic leaders we had in the Pave Low community.  Lou spoke his mind.  He was a master strategist, tactician, and warrior.
  My dad proudly served as a Prisoner of War in Vietnam.  When they could not see each other due to separation, the prisoners often communicated with a "tap code" through the walls.  Because it's a tedious process they often developed brevity codes, or abbreviations for commonly used terms.  For God Bless You, they used "GBU".
  This was part of the training where Lou served as a squadron commander at USAF Survival School.
  I'm proud to have served with him and I offer sincere condolences to Val and the girls.

My sincere condolences to you and the family. Knowing Lou was a relationship that made me a better person because of who he was.

Hi Val,

At your request I'd like to share a story. Everyone knows Lou had a quick wit and perfect timing, and this is a perfect example. When we were at USAFA (7th squadron) we went on a field trip to visit an active wing (I don't remember where). This was like a vacation for us. We were invited to attend the wing's hail-and-farewell (where the wing commander says goodbye to those who are leaving and hello to the new arrivals) later in the day at the officer's club, and we had some time to kill. So we (Foster Sinclair, Mike Cosley, Mike Rampino, Terry Slemp (RIP), Lou and I) made our way to the package store, headed back to our quarters and started pounding beers. Our AOC (commanding officer), Captain Peterson, was a scary West Point grad. It seemed like if you went near him, you got in trouble. So we all kept our distance. As we made our way to the hail-and-farewell who do we run into? Captain Peterson, who joins us on our walk. So we get real quiet (holding in our beer breath). As we walk behind the officer's club we smell a stench near some vents and the a/c unit. Without skipping a beat, Lou says "Oh, that's the machine that sucks that farts out of the bars stools". We all start laughing so hard we can barely walk. Captain Peterson too. I don't think I've laughed so hard in my entire life. We eventually made it to the hail-and-farewell, trying unsuccessfully to hold in our laughs. Miraculously, no one got in trouble. Only Lou could pull this off. There are so many stories I could tell, and many I can't:)

I've spent the last few days laughing and crying. Lou touched so many lives in a positive way. I miss him terribly, but he's always right here (Reed points to heart).

Words cannot express the scope of the loss of Lou and Kevin.

I met Lou in the Civil Air Patrol and we flew together on several occasions. He had a way of making you think by asking "do you think..." as opposed to simply saying "don't do that."
He came into CAP with an instant promotion to Lt Col, but immediately set about to complete the requirements that someone without his USAF Colonel rank would need to complete to earn it. He was a man of utmost integrity and with a strong work ethic.
I was honored when he asked that I deliver the invocation prayer at his USAF retirement. He will be missed, but I'm glad to know that he's in the arms of Jesus. May the peace that passes understanding wash over you at this time.

My deepest condolences to the Caporicci family on the sudden loss of Louis. I had the honour of serving with "PAVE Lou" while assigned to RAF Mildenhall as a maintainer. He always treated all the maintenance personnel with the greatest respect and we all held him in high regard. I shared his passion for historic aircraft and when time allowed, we often engaged in long chats about our favourite subject. I am once again deeply sorry for your loss. Lou left a positive impression on everyone he encountered.

My heart goes out to the family.  I cannot imagine the pain.  Lou and I ran in the same circles at the Academy..  I was closer to Kevin but I knew Lou as well.  I became physically sick at my stomach when I received the call.  No words can ease your pain but Lou's spirit will accompany all of you until you meet again.  God Bless you all!

Even as a junior officer, Lou was not afraid to point out to others senior to him when they had done something wrong.  During a training exercise in Korea, my crew was assigned to insert a team deep into mountainous terrain.  I assigned my inexperienced copilot (not Lou) to handle the navigation duties while I concentrated on flying the aircraft.  We were unable to find the landing zone and had to return to base with our team still onboard.  I must have been pretty hard on my copilot afterwards, because he complained to his fellow copilot, Lou about what had happened.   

Lou approached me and called me on what I had done wrong.  He said I should not have put the responsibility for the toughest part of the mission (dead reckoning in mountainous terrain) on this young man and then blame the failure of the mission on him. 

Lou was absolutely right.  The following day I apologized to my copilot and we were given a second chance to accomplish the mission.  After reassigning the cockpit duties more evenly, we succeeded in inserting our team at the proper spot.  Upon our return, I thanked the copilot for his efforts.  

The lessons I learned from Lou thirty years ago stay with me to this day.  Patience.  Compassion.  Looking out for others.  Sharing your knowledge and experience.  These are just some of the qualities that made Lou such a great man.  He was godfather to our daughter, Chelsea.  Although we lost touch over the years I now miss him terribly, as do we all.  Rest in peace, my brother.

Dear Val and girls, my condolences to you on Lou's passing. I worked for  him several years ago in Hawaii and he was an outstanding boss, colleague, and friend. I pray that God will give you comfort in this difficult time.

We were so blessed to meet you on the pilgrimage. Your love for each other was so evident. May you receive comfort that Lou is celebrating the eternal Easter in his heavenly home. You are all in our prayers.

Our time with Lou in the Holy land was very short but enough to see what an incredible man and husband he was. Steve and I want to extend our most sincere condolences to you.  Our prayer is that the memories of your hero become a comfort and a blessing to you.  I know his life and the manner in which he conducted himself will be a source of inspiration to all who knew him.  We don't have many larger than life men, who lead and conduct themselves with the absolute integrity and superior character of Capo.....for that he will be sorely grieved by many.  To say he was a leader and mentor is an understatement....everyone who had the privilege of even one conversation with him came away from that conversation with a valuable life lesson.  May his name be written in the book of life forever.

I was just bragging on Lou last week when I was sharing how he taught me about speed reading.  While he was Commanding at the Survival School, I took him a 2 page request and he spent about 3 seconds looking at it and then began asking technical questions about my proposal!!  I was floored.  I asked him how he did this and he said throughout his career he had been forced to digest so much information, it was second nature.  I sought out this technique and have gotten much better.  Especially necessary since Lou also approved my departure from Survival to pursue rotary wing aviation. We spent many hours talking about what it took to be successful in that community and his words strengthened me.  I think of him often, and will continue to do so, because like so many others here who have benefitted from knowing him, he forever influenced me in a positive way. He is a reference point for duty and honor, spirit and humor, leadership and trust, courage and dedication.  As you re-read this over the years, be confident that his memory and influence are alive in me and all that I influence because of him.

What a privledge it was to meet lou while in the Holy Land.  He obviously held many important positions during his lifetime and served our country (thank you) with honor, but watching he and his wife together made it very obvious which of his titles were most important to him.  Husband.  And to his precious girls.. you are his legacy.  I am sure he loved you very very much and I am so sorry for your loss.  Know that you have an extended family in all of us that traveled to Israel together and that we are and will continue to pray for each of you.  God Bless this sweet family. Although our time together was brief, I remember our discussions about adjusting to being "empty-nesters" as a new phase of life.  It was clear that you both had a beautiful relationship. I was blessed to meet Lou on the pilgrimage and we share the Air Force Academy connection.  (My son is also a grad.)  I will always remember his words of advice and support.   Lou was a righteous man, an honorable officer and a heck of a lot of fun.  I will think of him every time I see a man with a great mustache!  My prayers are with your family, Val.

I was shocked to learn of Lou's passing.  I first met Lou when I arrived at SOCCENT circa 96/97.   I remember his flat top and chewing unlit cigars and what fun he was during our exercises.  He always treated us enlisted guys with the greatest respect.  I last saw him when we were both back at SOCOM.  Sure was good to see him again and I was proud to serve with him!!

You are all in my thoughts and prayers!!

Dear Val. I very much enjoyed flying with Lou in Okinawa, Korea, and Philippines.  Kelly and I are very sorry for your loss.

Our hearts go out with great sadness to the Caporicci family.  Lou and I (and our families), served in the US Air Force during the 1980s in Okinawa, Japan.  During that time, I came to know Lou as an outstanding officer and pilot.  Most importantly, he became a true friend.  His tragic passing while aviating is especially poignant to those of us who have, and still practice the art.  Yet our pain at Lou's loss is assuaged as we trust that he has flown straight into the arms of his Father, the God he so faithfully served.  Val, may this same God deeply comfort you and your family as you greave Lou's passing.

We are saddend by this loss of such a kind and caring man. Lou was truly a genuine great guy. We would make jokes and say we are finally someday going to settle in Tampa with the Capo family,  since we have followed them so many times before. Our sincerest condolences.

Val and Family, May the grace of God keep you comforted in this time of deep sadness.  Lou was a dear friend during our Academy days and the news of his untimely passing strikes to the core.  He was a fine, fine man with a zest for life that couldn't help but lift your spirits.  My wife, Beth, and I send our very deepest condolences.

He always made time to talk to me (one of his gunners) and I always walked out with him to our cars where we talked about drones and other flying stuff.  I will miss my good friend.
