Ramon was born to Maria Boneta Rosado and Dolores Cuevas Perez
(known as Tito Cuevas) in 1926 in Utuado, Puerto Rico. He left Puerto
Rico at age 19 to pursue work in the states.
He eventually settled in Lorain, Ohio where he worked and retired from
U.S. Steel Corporation. He and his wife Sara relocated to the Tampa area
in 1986.
Ramon was an avid gardener. He loved planting and harvesting food. He
was recognized around the neighborhood for his large banana plants that
would have cars stopping in front of the house to admire. One of his
biggest joys was giving away fruits and vegetables to friends and
neighbors. He would speak about the gratification he would feel knowing
someone else could enjoy his avocados & mangos even after he was long
gone. His granddaughter proudly referred to him as the “best botanist ever”! Known for his kindness,
generosity, and mild-manner, he was foremost, a loyal, hard worker who provided above and beyond
for his family. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sons, Raymond Cuevas, Jr. and Oscar LoPolito, daughter, Carmen Cuevas, five
grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his wife, Sara and son, Omar
Alexis Cuevas. Ramon was the last living of seven brothers and sisters.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation Sunday, September 8, 2019, from noon – 2:00pm (service
beginning @ 1:30) at Blount & Curry West Chapel, 6802 Silvermill Dr., Tampa. Burial will follow, 3:00 pm
at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
In honor or Grandparents day, also the day of his Celebration of Life, the grandchildren penned
these memories: (listed in order of birth)
Amanda LoPolito Bruner - Grandpa was a very humble, caring and generous man. My fondest memories
are of him working in his garden, which I called “The Jungle”. He was as brilliant and passionate as he
was humble, one look at the jungle clearly demonstrates this. He cultivated and brought life to soil where
certain plants should never have grown. Grandpa gave open handedly that which he grew, sharing his
fruits and vegetables and expecting nothing. The passion and care he put in his jungle is the way he lived
his life. I will always cherish our times wandering together in the jungle. His gentle and caring ways will be
greatly missed and our memories together will always be cherished.
Vanessa Lynn Garcia - I look up to my Grandfather for being able to do what most people cannot do;
grow food and medicine while not producing waste in the process. Ramon was naturally a grower of food
and herbs with medicinal quality all his life. He grew up in Utuado, Puerto Rico cultivating and growing
from seed. This was the way of life where he grew up and this is what his family always did. My
Grandfather was a simple working man who took care of his family with all the resources and love he had.
Many friends would come to his house and he would give them papayas, mangos, aloe vera and much
more that he grew himself. He always had a strong, yet humble exterior personality and hid his heart of
gold well from people with bad, selfish intentions. He was a no-nonsense man. When I would come to
visit, he would tell me the story of when he brought me on the airplane for the very first time when I was a
baby. The joy in his face as he reflected on that memory of taking me on my first airplane ride will forever
be playing in my head.. I love him so much and learned a lot from him. When he would see me frustrated,
he reminded me to “take it easy”. He knew it wasn’t worth getting upset at selfish people. I didn’t know
that yet. Now I do. Thank you, Grandpa.
Alexandra Marie Thakkar - Some of my fondest memories are simple ones. Walking through the garden
and asking what plants were what and watching him make me a box of fresh fruits and plants to take
home with me. He also was the person who taught me how to play dominoes. I remember sitting for hours
with him and grandma forgetting time and playing at the kitchen table and eating Cuban bread and
drinking fresh made hot cocoa he would make for all us grandkids. I am feeling so blessed that my
children have also created their own memories with their Great-Grandfather. They remember him in
similar ways as I did as a child and for that we are truly grateful and will always cherish his memory
fondly.
Derek James Garcia - Ramon Cuevas, or to many of us “Papi” was the greatest man I’ve ever known who
just happened to be my Grandfather. Upon reflecting on his unique character, I have learned what it
means to genuinely love, appreciate and care about one’s dutiful work ethic. Papi always put others
before himself, especially when it came to family. He had a gift of sharing his faith and knowledge with
people that was as straightforward as you can imagine. His perseverance and persistence is something I
will always model. I will never ever forget my dear Grandpa Papi.
David Ray Garcia - My Grandfather was a hard working, loving, and wise man. He was truly an inspiration
to all who knew him. I will always remember how he would tell my wife and I that we should always be
together, because that is where true happiness comes from. I know he would tell us that because he
believed that after God, family is everything. My Grandfather knew that true wealth comes from the love
that is shared between family and friends. I will live out the rest of my days always remembering the value
he placed on the things in life that really matter. I love you and will miss you very much, mi Abuelo.
Emmari Garcia - Grandpa was one of the strongest men I've ever met. He was strong in his faith, strong
in his values, all around strong. He stood firm in his beliefs, in his ways of doing things, and never
wavered. He was a hard worker and had a passion for the land, cultivating and planting on the land. He
shared his core values with us over and over, each time he saw us. Not just because he believed strongly
in them, but because he wanted the best for us, his family. He loved us so much and just wanted us to be
well. Though we know he is in the better place, in the presence of God. We miss him and will miss seeing
him working in the garden and sharing his delicious fruits/veggies. We will also miss him singing his
beautiful birthday song to each of us and him reminding us to be safe and lock our doors as we drive
home. Grandpa, it was an honor to have had you in our lives for as long as we did and we will see you
again one day. Love, Emmari.
