

MACEO, Dr. Remember Gomez passed at her home and into the arms of her Lord and Savior on June 15th surrounded by her loving family. She was born Oct. 12, 1923 to Ramon and Francisca Maceo in Santiago de Cuba. Remember earned her doctoral degree in Education from the University of Havana. In 1963 she and her family sought political asylum in the US. She taught for 20 years until 1983 when Remember and her late husband Jose Teovaldo retired to Tampa. She volunteered at various institutions such as; Ybor City Museum Society, Cuban Civic Club, Casa Cuba, Club 15, Inc., and her church. Remember helped found Centro Historico Cultural Cubano and American Red Cross Hispanic Initiative. She served as President of La Union Martí-Maceo for many years. As part of the USF Latin Community Advisory Committee, she helped establish USF’s Latino Scholarship Program. Remember was the recipient of numerous awards including Tampa’s Hispanic Woman of the Year in 2001. A Descendent of a family whose name is revered by Cubans for its role in Cuba’s independence, Remember felt a yearning to see Cuba free. She is survived by her sons, Teoby and José Ramón, daughter-in-laws Gail, María, Penny; granddaughters Jessica, Sofia; sisters, Juanita, Thais; brother Reyns. A visitation will take place at First Hispanic Presbyterian Church, 2828 W Kirby St, Tampa, FL at 11AM on Thursday, June 18, 2015 with funeral services beginning at 12 noon. Interment will then follow at 2PM at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa, FL.
