Sara Lopez

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, our beloved mother, grandmother and family matriarch, Sara Lopez, age 96, was surrounded by her loving family, as she entered into the eternal life, to be reunited with her heavenly family.

She is predeceased by her husband, Serafín López; her brothers, Manolo and Ramón Fernández Freijido; her sister, Carmiña Fernández Freijido; brothers-in-law, José and Antonio López; sister-in-law, Josefina López; nephews, Joselito López, Antonio López Jr; and niece, Martha López Melcon.

She is survived by her son, Joe Lopez; daughter Maria Carmen Sorondo (Don); granddaughters, Denise Green (Shawn), Alicia Lopez, Christie Kohler (Scott), Theresa Lopez; grandson, Joseph Sorondo (Meghan);great-grandchildren, Colin Lopez,Isabella Green, Jack Green, River Kohler,Lenora Sorondo; sister, Manuela Fernandez Domínguez; sister-in-law and best friend, Gloria López; niece Clarissa Gloger (Joe); nephew Thomas López; great-niece’s, Ariana López, Bianca and Jacqueline Melcon; great-nephew, Joseph Gloger (Maggie) and family and friends in Tampa, Spain, Cuba and Brazil.

Sara was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, on February 11, 1927, to Jose Fernández Domínguez and Carmen Freijido Seoane. Upon the passing of her mother and an infant brother, her father sold the family business and relocated his younger son and daughter to Galicia, Spain, to be reunited with his family. Her father later remarried his deceased wife’s sister, Ermesinda, and they had three children.

Growing up as the oldest of five children, to a family experiencing a multitude of hardships, Sara spent most of her childhood and young adult years taking care of her younger siblings, in addition to assisting her stepmother with cooking and other household chores. Thus, leaving little time for her to attend school or to participate in childhood activities.

As she grew older, her father realized that Sara was very sad that she could not attend school or learn a trade. Upon consulting with her, she was enrolled in sewing school. She learned sewing skills that led her to become an accomplished seamstress and to operate a successful business.

Sara married Serafín López and had two children while living in Spain. The family endured many hardships, and upon the advice of her faither and in consultation with her husband, she made the ultimate sacrifice to leave her family in Spain to pursue better opportunities for her family. She emigrated to Cuba, where she had family. Her husband, Serafín, later joined her and they both secured employment with a wealthy French family, who owned a pharmaceutical company. During this time, Sara spent her years learning and perfecting French cooking and baking skills that were frequently utilized to host large parties and banquets for dignitaries and guests.

In 1950 Sara and Serafin agreed to work for an American family in Tampa, who would facilitate legal immigration status for them and later for their two children, who were living with their grandparents in Spain. They spent years working for the influential family in Tampa caring for their children, cooking and baking daily meals, and hosting many parties and celebrations for some of Tampa’s wealthiest families.

In 1963, Sara and Serafín bought their first house in Ybor City, and she became employed in a sewing factory where she became one of the top performing seamstresses in the company.

Upon her retirement from the sewing factory, she secured a license from the City of Tampa to open and operate a sewing business from her home. She had finally accomplished her life’s dream. Throughout her sewing career, she inspired and taught a multitude of students of varying ages, she designed and made, without a pattern, hundreds of dresses, including wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, Quinceañera gowns, costumes and an array of other accessories. Her students and clients will forever remember and admire their talented and accomplished teacher and friend.

Sara loved and treasured her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and family here and abroad, and was instrumental in inspiring them to succeed and excel in their personal and professional lives.

She was a devout Catholic who practiced her faith in her daily actions.

A visitation and service will take place on Monday, November 13, 2023, at Gonzalez Funeral Home, 7209 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33614. Public viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a Catholic Service to begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at 1:00p.m. at Centro Español de Tampa Memorial Park Cemetery, 4601 W Lake Ave, Tampa FL, 33610.

Sara nació en Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, el 11 de febrero de 1927, hija de José Fernández Domínguez y Carmen Freijido Seoane. Tras el fallecimiento de su madre y un hermano pequeño, su padre vendió el negocio familiar y trasladó a su hijo menor y a su hija a Galicia, España, para reunirse con su familia. Más tarde, su padre se volvió a casar con la hermana de su difunta esposa, Ermesinda, y tuvieron tres hijos.

Aprendió habilidades de costura que la llevaron a convertirse en una costurera consumada y a operar un negocio exitoso.

Sara se casó con Serafín López y tuvo dos hijos mientras vivía en España. La familia soportó muchas dificultades y, siguiendo el consejo de su padre y consultando con su marido, ella hizo el máximo sacrificio de dejar a su familia en España para buscar mejor oportunidades para su familia. Emigró a Cuba, donde tenía familia. Su marido, Serafín, se unió a ella más tarde y ambos consiguieron empleo en una familia francesa adinerada, propietaria de una empresa farmacéutica. Durante este tiempo, Sara pasó sus años aprendiendo y perfeccionando las habilidades de cocina y repostería francesas que se utilizaban con frecuencia para organizar grandes fiestas y banquetes para dignatarios e invitados.

En 1950 Sara y Serafín acordaron trabajar para una familia estadounidense en Tampa, que les facilitaría la situación migratoria legal a ellos y más tarde a sus dos hijos, que vivían con sus abuelos en España. Pasaron años trabajando para la influyente familia de Tampa cuidando a sus hijos, cocinando y horneando comidas diarias y organizando muchas fiestas y celebraciones para algunas de las familias más ricas de Tampa.

En 1963, Sara y Serafín compraron su primera casa en Ybor City y ella empezó a trabajar en una fábrica de costura, donde se convirtió en una de las costureras de mejor desempeño de la empresa.

Al retirarse de la fábrica de costura, obtuvo una licencia de la ciudad de Tampa para abrir y operar un negocio de costura desde su casa. Finalmente había cumplido el sueño de su vida. A lo largo de su carrera de costura, inspiró y enseñó a multitud de estudiantes de distintas edades, diseñó y confeccionó, sin patrón, cientos de vestidos, incluidos vestidos de novia, vestidos de damas de honor, vestidos de quinceañera, disfraces y una variedad de otros accesorios. Sus estudiantes y clientes siempre recordarán y admirarán a su talentosa y consumada maestra y amiga.

Sara amaba y valoraba a sus hijos, nietos, bisnietos y familiares aquí y en el extranjero, y contribuyó decisivamente a inspirarlos a tener éxito y sobresalir en sus vidas personales y profesionales.

Era una católica devota que practicaba su fe en sus acciones diarias.

El velorio y el servicio se llevarán a cabo el lunes 13 de noviembre de 2023 en González Funeral Home, 7209 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33614. La visita pública será de 10 a. m. a 12:00 p. m. con un servicio católico que comenzará a las 11:00 a. m. el entierro se llevará a cabo a la 1:00 p. m. en el Cementerio Centro Español de Tampa Memorial Park, 4601 W Lake Ave, Tampa FL, 33610.
