

C.L. 'Lawrence' Maedgen, age 89 of Troy, died Monday, December 10, 2012 at the William R. Courtney State Veterans Home in Temple. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 14, 2012 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors from 6-8:00 PM Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the funeral home. Mr. Maedgen was born on June 10, 1923 on the family farm outside Troy, Texas to Dee Van Maedgen and Nannie Jacques. He was a graduate of Troy High School where he was active in FFA and won his Lone Star Farmer degree. He attended Texas A&M university where he was a member of the Corps. Lawrence was drafted during World War II where he served in the European Theater and participated in the Battle of the Bulge (69th Division). His medals and badges included the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Marksman Badge, two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct, American Campaign Europe-Africa-Middle East, Victory Medal WWII, Occupation Medal WWII, Combat Service, Battle of the Bulge and Victory in Europe. Lawrence married Caroline Robinson on February 23, 1947. She predeceased him on August 16, 2012. He was a life-long farmer and rancher, working the home place that was settled by his grandfather in 1872. He was a member of the Angus Breeders Association and Duroc Breeders Association. In addition, he owned and operated Maedgen Feed & Supply in Troy. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was fond of forty-two and checkers. Lawrence was predeceased by three brothers, William O., Dee Van and Raymond and a sister, Geraldine Nelson. Survivors include his four children, Karen Neeley of Austin, Larry Maedgen and Kevin Dee Maedgen of Los Angeles, and George Michael Mike' Maedgen of Troy; four grandchildren, Amanda Maedgen, Dee Michael Maedgen, Abbey Maedgen and Jason Neeley; six step grandchildren; four great grandchildren, Kimberlyn Seaman, Amon Maedgen Fitzgerald, Bailey Maedgen and Katlyn Maedgen; and one great great grandson, Arden DeBaun. Memorials may be given in Mr. Maedgen's name to the William R. Courtney State Veterans Home, 1424 MLK Jr. Lane, Temple, Texas 76504 or to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Troy, Box 9, Troy, Texas 76579.
