

Donald Barton Southerland, Sr., age 77, of Temple passed away Sunday, January 16, 2011 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 19, at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Raney Southerland, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Pendleton Cemetery. Mr. Southerland was born on October 28, 1933 in the Cedar Creek community to William Barton and Opal Lillian (Carberry) Southerland. He was reared and educated in Pendleton and Troy. He married Edna Schmidt on June 28, 1958. He was owner and operator of Ideal Insulation for 10 years and later R & S Sales Outlet for 26 years retiring in 1995. He cherished spending time with his family and friends no matter when or where but especially enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting and always enjoyed a game of dominoes or poker. A cup of coffee with friends was time well spent and being a loving son, husband, father and grandfather always came first. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raney Southerland. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Edna Southerland of Temple, three sons, Don Southerland, Jr. and wife, Ellie of Plano, Dr. Gary Southerland and wife, SueAnn of Temple and Alan Southerland of Gatesville, three grandchildren, Eric, Chad and Jenna Southerland all of Temple and sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Southerland of Belton , Billie Schmidt of Brenham, Juanell Yakesch and husband, Garland of Holland and brother-in-law, Wayne Schmidt of College Station. Pallbearers are Richard Southerland, Keith Lowe, Terry Whitley, Charles Lively, Sonny Kurtz and Tim Kelly.
