Dorothy Lee Wiltz Edgar was born on February 22, 1930, in Port Arthur, Texas to Peggy and Joseph Lee Wiltz. She was the eldest of three daughters. When she was 8 years old, she along with her mother and younger sister moved to Warren, Texas where her mother met and married Clyde Williford, who was a wonderful stepfather.
Dorothy excelled at school and was a favorite of her teachers for her dedication and hard work. She especially admired her home economics teacher, who taught the country girls how to make their own shampoo during WWII when supplies were scarce. After graduating Dorothy worked as a switchboard operator and soon after she met Tim Edgar at a local neighbor’s house party. The dark-haired Dorothy caught his attention, and he kept looking at her all night. Apparently, he was too shy to talk to her that evening, but he soon had his younger brother, Tommy, a classmate of Dorothy’s, ask her out on his behalf. The rest is history. They were married on October 15, 1949, in Warren. They moved to Beaumont, where they soon started a family that quickly grew to five children; the family would continue to grow over time to include sixteen grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was always active at her church, teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and visiting and delivering food to the sick and elderly. She hosted many visiting pastors and summer missionaries at the house, along with taking care of her five kids. She and Tim also helped with the youth singing group, Shining Light. They were friends with several couples from their church and extended family members with whom they shared many meals, laughter, countless games of 42 dominoes and many vacations together. Dorothy and Tim were also very dedicated to caring for their widowed mothers.
Dorothy was an excellent cook; with so many mouths to feed she practically lived in the kitchen. She was also a talented seamstress, loved arts and crafts, and helped make many wedding quilts for young couples and baby quilts for sick children. She even made all the bridesmaids' dresses for her eldest daughter’s wedding. Dorothy quickly realized that with four daughters, it would be too much to repeat!
One of Dorothy’s favorite places to go was back to where she grew up in Warren. She and Tim enjoyed many weekends there, relaxing in the quiet woods. Many of the grandchildren have fond memories of fishing, building fires, and just hanging out with their grandparents.
After Tim passed away, Dorothy moved to Temple, Texas. She stayed in a senior living community where she made many friends Once again she was playing lots of games which she loved to do including 42 dominoes, Rumikub, scrabble and corn hole. She even won the prestigious 42 Player Champion Award. She was also a regular attendee at Taylor’s Valley Baptist Church and brought several of her friends with her.
Dorothy will be remembered by her family not only as a good cook (her gumbo was a delicious family favorite), but also for her faith in God. She shared that faith with her family at get-togethers by reading the Bible and sharing the story of Jesus, making sure her grandchildren knew the plan of salvation. Reading the Bible and praying were part of her daily life. A favorite memory of her oldest daughters was seeing their mother kneeling by her bed in prayer.
Aunt Dot, as she was fondly known, will be missed by many, including her sister-in-law Billie, many nieces and nephews, and her best friend of many years was Mrs. Linne Etheridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tim, her sisters, Jo Evelyn and Aurelia, her son-in-law, Jim Thomson, and her grandson, David Warner.
Dorothy leaves behind her five children: Cathy Medina (spouse Xavier), Beth Morrison (spouse Glen), Robert Edgar (spouse Sherra), Carol Warner (spouse Lloyd), and Ellen Thomson; sixteen grandchildren; and twenty-six great-grandchildren.
Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Wildflower Assisted Living Facility and Aspen Hospice, who provided loving care for Dorothy over the last few months of her life.
