
Dr. William Jon Bean, age 70, of Temple died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at his residence. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 10, at St. Luke Catholic Church with Rev. Brian Eilers and Deacon Jerry Klement as celebrants. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 7 PM Tuesday with a rosary to follow at 7:00 PM at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. Dr. Bean was born on May 23, 1937 in St. Paul, Minnesota to William Joseph and Mary Thornton Bean. He married Suzanne Norton on June 28, 1958 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Dallas. He attended Arlington State College and Texas A&M University, Bryan/College Station for his pre-med education in 1962. He received his M.D. degree from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. While serving an internship at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, he was honored as an outstanding intern for the year 1962-63. Before joining the staff at King's Daughters Clinic, Dr. Bean completed a three year residency in internal medicine at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dallas. He joined the King's Daughters Hospital Staff in 1966. Dr. Bean was instrumental in organizing and setting up the King's Daughters Hospital Special Intensive Care Unit in 1969. Dr. Bean's favorite hobby was scuba diving and underwater photography. He and his wife, Suzie, learned to scuba dive together and they made several trips to the Caribbean near the Bonaire Grand Cayman, Roatan Islands, San Salvadore, Cozumel, Great Barrier Reef, Philippines and the Red Sea. He was an avid underwater photographer. Pictures he had taken decorated the waiting area of the clinic medical department at King's Daughters. He was also a member of the International Society of Aquatic Medicine and of the Undersea Medical Society. Dr. Bean loved to fish and spent his last years with good friends taking fishing trips to Alaska. He became Board Certified as a Diplomat in Internal Medicine in August 1999. He retired from King's Daughters Clinic in May 2003. He joined VistaCare Hospice in Temple in August 2003. He became Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine in January 2007. Dr. Bean worked at VistaCare Hospice until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Ross Bean and a daughter, Kelley Anne Bean Massey. Survivors include his wife, Suzie Bean of Temple, daughters, Dana Bean of Georgetown, Cheryl Tierney of Morgan's Point, Cindy Bean of Leander, a son, William Bean of Leander, a brother, Terry T. Bean of Hotchkiss, Colorado and a sister, Susan Yosten of Plano. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Suzanne Bilbrey of San Marcos, Cyndi Bilbrey of Temple, Jana Hall-Tanner of Belton, Wesley Hall of Belton, Jamie Harris of Canyon Lake, William John Bean of Guatemala and one great-grandchild, Brian Schauer of Canyon Lake. Memorials may be made to King's Daughter Hospital or VistaCare Hospice. Pallbearers are Dr. Henry Mayer, Dave Yosten, Dennis Massey, Terry Bean, Tommy Schroeder and Mitch Tierney.
