

Evelyn Philp Allen, 93, died Thursday, April 2, 2009 after a brief stay in a Temple hospital. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, April 6, at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Minister Darrell Knight officiating. Burial will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4:00 - 6:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Allen was born Sept. 7, 1915 in Oenaville to J.W. and Lydia Roper Philp and lived in the Temple area all of her life. She graduated from Yoe High School in Cameron, attended Baptist Academy in San Marcos and Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton. She earned a teaching certificate in piano and studied voice with Mrs. M.H. Simmons. She married Cumbee Allen on May 14, 1937 in the home of her parents in Oenaville. H.W. McClish from the Belton Church of Christ performed the ceremony. The Allens lived in Oenaville until they moved into Temple in 1953. Mr. Allen farmed all of his life and while farming in the 1940s he owned and operated a grocery store in Oenaville. Mrs. Allen was a homemaker. Mr. Allen preceded her in death in 1984. A life-long member of the Church of Christ, she was a member of the Northside Church of Christ in Temple. She is survived by two sons, B.J. and MeRi Allen and Tim and Gloria Allen all of Temple. Mrs. Allen was blessed with three grandchildren, JanaBeth Bane of Houston, Jeff Allen of San Antonio, and Ashley Shoemaker of Temple, and two great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Hanson Bane of Houston. She is also survived by a host of relatives, friends, and church family. Pallbearers are Luke Shoemaker, John Chlapek, Larry Allen, Gary Taliaferro, Joe Ritchie and Richard Clark.
