
Gary Alan Reeves, age 46, of Gatesville died Monday, November 10, 2008 in a Temple hospital. Services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, November 13 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Chapel with Pastor John Heckmann officiating. Burial will follow at Flint Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Gary was born on May 23, 1962 in Hampton, VA and moved to The Grove with his family in 1973. He graduated from Gatesville High School in 1980. His educational background consists of a Master of Science, University of Central Texas, Killeen, in Counseling Psychology, Master of Science (with Distinction), Long Island University, Brooklyn, New York, in Social Science with a minor in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, University of Central Texas, Killeen an associates in Applied Science, Temple College, Temple. Gary was the former Chief of Police of Lorena and also served many years as the Treatment Director for Brookhaven Youth Ranch in Gholson. He was currently a college instructor at Hill College in Hillsboro where he taught Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology and numerous continuing education classes. He also had training from the United States Department of Homeland Security, Office for State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness and was a National WMD Standardized Awareness Trainer. He also had training from the New York Institute of Security and Polygraph Sciences in addition to numerous continuing education courses and certificates. He was a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor and a Master Addictions Counselor, also, a Licensed Master Social Worker-Advanced Practitioner. In addition, he was a Licensed Texas Peace Officer and maintained solidifying ties to local law enforcement agencies. Gary built the Criminal Justice program at Hill College into a recognized and well respected program. In addition, he identified the opportunity to expand the program into Drug and Alcohol Counseling. He was instrumental in establishing Hill College's first dual admissions partnerships with other universities. He was well loved by his students and positively influenced the lives of many through his encouragement and dedication to education. Survivors include three sisters, Karen Keyser from Edwardsville, Illinois, Paula Bangsund and her husband Robert , Pamela Winkler and her husband Elmer, both from The Grove, two brothers, Richard Reeves and his wife Cindy from Williamsburg, Virginia, and Ronnie Reeves and his wife Elaine, from Chancellor, Alabama. He has 11 nieces and nephews and 15 great nieces and great nephews. Preceded in death by his parents Ray and Billie Clawson Reeves from The Grove and his grandparents, George and Polly Clawson of The Grove and Sam and Ethel Reeves of New Brockton, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gary Reeves Scholarship Fund for Criminal Justice, c/o Hill College, 112 Lamar Drive, Hillsboro, TX 76645, Attn: Gary Reeves Fund.
