Harold P. (Hal) Rose

Harold P. (Hal) Rose, age 79, of Temple died Tuesday, December 13, 2011 in a local assisted living center. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, December 18, at Temple Bible Church with Senior Pastor Gary DeSalvo officiating. Private family burial with military honors was held at Hillcrest Cemetery. Mr. Rose was born on September 10, 1932 in Temple to John Halbrook and Anne Price Rose. He graduated from Temple High School in 1950 where he was Captain of the football team. He graduated from Texas Christian University in 1954 with a degree in Government. He later earned a Masters Degree in Comptrollership from Syracuse University in New York State. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954 as a lieutenant with his first assignment being the 82nd Airborne Division where he served as a paratrooper. He married Caralen Jean Lykes, a native of Temple, in 1956. As a career soldier he also served in the 1st Division and the 101st Airborne Division, and the Pentagon. His overseas service included Korea, Vietnam and Turkey. He graduated from the Army War College in 1978. He retired from the military in 1983 as a Colonel and was employed until 1985 as Assistant Administrator at King's Daughters Hospital. In 1985, he became the Executive Director of the Temple Housing Authority. He headed the Housing Authority through a period of great growth and increased services. In 2002, he also became Executive Director of the Belton Housing Authority and served both organizations until his retirement in February 2005. In retirement, he continued to enjoy working on the family ranch on Owl Creek. Throughout his life, Hal was an avid tennis player, athlete, and motorcyclist. He was a member of Temple Rotary for more than 20 years and served as a Director of the Temple Chamber of Commerce. Hal Rose was a Christian who believes Jesus Christ is his savior and studied God's word at the Temple Bible Church. He was also a Gideon who distributed the Holy Bible to people and organizations throughout the area. Hal was involved in many charities. His survivors include wife Caralen, daughter Dyna Rose Bailey, son-in-law John Bailey, brother Clyde Rose, brother-in-law June Lykes, and sister-in-law Sue Lykes.
