Inus Elizabeth Hargrove-Wilson was born November 26, 1927 in Heidenheimer, Texas. She was the third daughter of Rose and Cliff Hargrove. Her mother was a surgical aid at Scott and White hospital, and her father was the postal clerk in Heidenheimer. She used to tell us a story that when she was born in her parents’ home, they could not get her to start breathing. Her grandmother, who we all knew as Granny Passe, placed her in a bucket of ice water and shocked her into life. From that start, mother was raised in a very active household in Heidenheimer along with her two sisters and her extended family.
She attended local schools before and during World War Two and worked in Temple until 1949 when she married William C. Wilson Jr., an officer in the United States Air Force. Together they spent the next 59 years building a wonderful life, including a 32 year career traveling the world in the Air Force. A daughter, Margaret, was born in England in 1954, and a son, Jeffrey, was born in Bermuda in 1960.
After retiring from the service in 1974, the family moved to Ft. Worth, Texas, where they lived until 1993. The family then moved to Temple so that Inus could be closer to her mother, who had by then moved into a nursing home, and her two older sisters. Over the next decade or so, she cared for her mother and sisters, her husband, and her adult children, cooking fabulous meals and working tirelessly in what she loved to call her "English Garden." After her husband, Bill, passed on in March of 2008, Inus continued to live in their lovely home in Temple, gardening and caring for her cats, and making every holiday a culinary delight. With her health declining, she made the difficult decision to sell her lovely house and move into assisted living in 2020. As her health continued to decline, Inus enjoyed visits with her friends and regular visits to her favorite restaurants with her children.
With her passing at the ripe old age of 96, Inus is finally free of the constant pain that she endured from Osteoarthritis, and the blindness she slowly developed from Glaucoma. We all believe that she is now free, young again, and surrounded by her parents, sisters, and the extended family she loved so much. We see her sitting in a beautiful garden with her cats, especially Skipper, the Maine Coon who saved the house from burning down one day by getting her attention so she could douse the flames in the kitchen with an extinguisher. She is finally free and at peace, living forever in the light and love of our Lord. We all firmly believe that one day we will all be reunited with her there. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Wilson, Jr. on March 20, 2008.
Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Wilson (Denise Hazlett) of Harker Heights and a daughter, Margaret Wilson of Enid, Oklahoma.
Memorials may be given in Mrs. Wilson’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
