Jim DeWitt Bowmer

Jim DeWitt Bowmer, 87, of Bell County, Texas, died Thursday at his home. Graveside services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 24, 2006 at the Bowmer Ranch with Rev. Bruce Burleson and Pastor Jimmy Towers officiating. Burial will be in the Peaceable Kingdom Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Bowmer was born May 4, 1919 in Bell County to DeWitt and Linnie Morgan Bowmer. He was a graduate of Temple High School in 1936, Temple Junior College in 1938, received his B.A. with honors in 1940 from Baylor University and his LLB with honors in 1942 from Baylor Law School. Mr. Bowmer served in the U. S. Army with JAG during World War II having served in Africa, Italy, Hawaii and the Philippines. Mr. Bowmer was Past President, State Bar of Texas, Past Chairman of Board of Directors, State Bar of Texas, Distinguished Alumnus of Baylor University and Baylor Law School, former Adjunct Professor at Baylor University Law School, recipient of honorary doctorate from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on May 11, 1996, and member of Board of Trustees, The Texas Supreme Court Historical Society. He has written or co-authored articles on Criminal Law and Procedure in the Baylor Law Review and Texas Bar Journal. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Temple and Peaceable Kingdom Baptist Church. He married Daurice Spoonts Yarbrough who died June 8, 1994. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Burleson and Martha Bowmer and his precious grandson Charles Bowmer Schreiner V. Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Nell Neal and husband Larry of Temple and Mary Helen Schreiner and husband Charles IV of Salado and Kerrville; 7 grandchildren, Scott Edmund Simmonds and wife Shawn, Dan DeWitt Simmonds and wife Marla, Brian Allen Neal and wife Jamie, Tiffany Nell DeWitt Schreiner, Julie Daurice Dickson and husband Sam, Tessa Charlene Schreiner, and Tyndal Daurice Elizabeth Schreiner; 7 great-grandchildren, Marli Joyce-Daurice Simmonds, Abigail Marie Simmonds, Colton Bowmer Simmonds, Jacqueline Nell Simmonds, Carlie Lorene Simmonds, Tucker Jackson Neal, and Annie Elizabeth Dickerson. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, 19051 FM 2484, Killeen, Texas 76542.
