

Johnny J. Maruna, age 87 of Temple, died Friday, December 29, 2017 in a local hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM Friday, January 5, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Steven Sauser as celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Bellwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 PM Thursday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with rosary recited at 7:00 PM. Mr. Maruna was born April 8, 1930 in Temple to John and Mary (Vanicek) Maruna. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1951 – 1954 where he served with the military police. He married Lucille Martinka on November 14, 1956. His occupational background included Sunshine Biscuits, Wilsonart, Pechal Cabinets and a self-employed painter. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a member of Knights of Columbus (3rd and 4th degree), SPJST, KJT and VFW. He was an avid reader who enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his yard and garden. He loved watching baseball, especially his favorite team, the Astros. His family was always very important to him, and he spent time with them whenever he could. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Margaret Allex. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lucille Maruna of Temple, three daughters, Diane Owens and husband, Danny of Temple, Barbara Beer and husband, Mike of Liverpool, Texas and Monica Jahns and husband, Michael of Temple, seven grandchildren, Renee Ventura and husband, Jason of Grapevine, Jeff Owens and wife, Kathryn of Winterville, Georgia, Jorge Cruz-Aedo of Houston, Jacob Jahns and wife, Lacy of Temple, Ethan Jahns and wife, Heidi of Evant, Lucy Jahns of Stephenville and Mary Jahns of Temple and five great-grandchildren, Caroline and Emerson Ventura, Lillian and Slade Jahns and Bennett Owens. Also surviving is his brother, Fred Maruna of Belton. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
