

Laverne Martin Pitts was born on December 20, 1924 in Waco,Tx. She joined our Lord on, Monday March 25th, 2013. Services will be Friday, March 29, 2013 at 11:00 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Patison, Rev. Hubert Austin, and Rev. Johnny Miller officiating. Visitation will be 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Scanio Harper Funeral Home on Thursday, March 28, 2013. Private family burial will be at Bellwood Memorial Park. Laverne was born to the late Tennie Mae & Virgil Clarence Martin. Her childhood was spent in Waco until her marriage to J. C. Pitts, Jr. on June 1, 1947. In January 1948, J. C. & Laverne moved to Temple and purchased the Bluebonnet Cafe. Laverne & J.C. felt honored to "serve the finest food to the finest people for our 60 years" throughout Temple & the Central Texas area. Laverne's blessings continued as the community, its organizations, people and businesses made friendships and partnerships over chicken fried steaks and J.C.'s coconut, chocolate, and apricot pies. Laverne credits her beautiful and fulfilled life to the wonderful friends and families who shared themselves with her family for generations. Laverne had the joy of service to Temple schools through PTA leadership, City Federation Bud & Blossom Garden Club, and Girl Scouts, as she was named a Woman of Distinction. Temple City Council honored Laverne for her dedication, service, and love to the community by naming September 15, 2005 as "Laverne Pitts Day". Laverne loved her church home, Oak Park United Methodist Church; a member for 63 years. Once said and expressed by many who love her, "She is Grandmother of the World and I am glad she is mine." Laverne Martin Pitts was preceded in death by her loving husband, J.C. Pitts, in April 1983; parents, Tennie Mae & Virgil Martin, and siblings Evelyn Copeland, Lorraine Crook, & Ernest Martin, and her son-in-law, Chester Sadler. Laverne is survived by her daughters Gaye Sadler of Gatesville, and Susan Luck & husband, George of Temple. Grandmother is also survived by her "7 Darling Angels", Dillon Martin & wife Shannon of Henderson, NV; Katie Doyle & husband, Jack of New Braunfels; Brent Luck of Austin; and Rachel Grief & husband, Chad of Rockwall and her "6 Great Darling Angels": Ryan, Alexander and Elizabeth Luck, Bayla & Dahvi Martin, and J. Riley Grief.
