Mrs. Barnes was born in Little Rock, Arkansas to Josh Petty and Willie McCall Petty. She married Ciscero Barnes, who preceeded her in death in 1982. She lived in Fort Worth most of her life before moving to Temple in 1992. She was a Baptist. She was a homemaker and was the bookkeeper for the family business, Barnes Hydraulics. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
