

Mary (Jakubec) Grygar, age 94, joined her Heavenly Father on January 9, 2012. Mary was born in Bell County, TX on December 14, 1917 to Ludvik and Josephine (Malcharcik) Jakubec Sr. After her mother's death in 1924, she was raised by her godparents, Joe J. and Ludmila (Matl) Horava in the rural Doubleheader community, east of Temple. Mary graduated from Komensky School near her home. Afterwards, she went to work at the Santa Fe Railroad Hospital in Temple, TX, as a nursing assistant. When she married William Grygar on February 11, 1946, she became a homemaker and assisted her husband with farming. In 1965, Mary went to work for the Temple Independent School District in food services and retired in 1983. For the majority of those years, she worked at Temple High School and enjoyed cooking, serving and meeting students. Mary was proud of her Czech heritage and was fluent in the language. She enjoyed her home and loved baking, canning and sewing. Her favorite pastimes included playing straight dominoes and quilting with friends. However, her greatest joy was raising her children and spending time with her family. Her most memorable family trips were to Sydney, Australia and Boston, Massachusetts. Mary was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Temple for 60 years and served as a member of the Altar Society and the KJZT Society. She also volunteered at St Mary's Catholic school. Preceding Mary in death were her husband, William Grygar; four brothers- Otto Jakubec, Ludvik (Ludy) Jakubec II, Joe S. Jakubec and Edward A. Jakubec; and a sister, Rosalie (Rosie) J. Sulak. She is survived by her four children- William W. Grygar of Montgomery, TX and wife Ilene; Ronald Grygar and Kenneth Grygar, both of Temple, TX; and Connie Henderson of Uxbridge, MA and husband Earnest; four grandchildren-Tara Henderson Blasor of Dallas, TX and husband, Evan; William W. Grygar II of Spring, TX and wife, Nicole; and Angela T. Grygar Skrabanek of Katy, TX and husband Neil; and four great grandchildren-Aidan and Maddux Grygar of Spring, TX and Skylar and Tyler Skrabanek of Katy, TX. Visitation followed by a rosary service will be held at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home on Thursday, January 12 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday, January 13, at 10:00 am with Rev. Ranjan Cletus and Rev. Stephen Nesrsta officiating. Attending pallbearers will be William W. Grygar II, Neil Skrabanek, Evan Blasor, Ernest Henderson, David Grygar and Eugene Brenek. Burial will be in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Mary's Catholic School Trust Fund, 1018 South 7th St., Temple, TX 76504. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff at Temple Living Center - Western Hills and Scott & White Hospice Care for their loving care and concern. They also wish to thank the Bereavement Committee of St. Mary's Catholic Church for the bereavement meal.
