Nona Bane Cole of Troy passed away on December 29th, 2025, after a long illness. She was born to Lelia and Bob Bane at the San Diego Naval Hospital on May 16th of 1944 and moved to Texas with her proud young parents at the end of WWII.
After graduating from Temple High School in 1962, Nona studied biology and medical technology and began her four-decade career at Scott and White Hospital. She worked as a cardiac ultrasound technician and was an EKG Tech Supervisor when she retired in 2002.
In 1966 she met and married her former husband Frank Turner during his time stationed at Fort Hood and had one son, Michael Leigh Turner, in December of 1971.
Nona had a special talent for training and communicating with animals, a skill she acquired from her grandfather A.H. Nehring, whom she adored. Her lifelong love of horses began at a young age when she learned to ride and care for them at his side.
Ultimately, she built her own stable of 13 miniature horses at her place in Troy, breeding, training, and showing them. Along the way she became quite involved in breeding and training dogs, especially Norwegian Elkhounds and Norwich Terriers. Nona was good at that too- she showed dogs twice at the Westminster Dog Show in New York!
Nona was a marvelous cook. She hosted many fabulous meals for friends and family at her home in Troy. Those gatherings are among our fondest memories of Nona. She occasionally did cooking demonstrations to share her joy of cooking.
In 2002 Nona married David Patton Cole. Retired from her work in 2002, she and David enjoyed their shared interests, traveling, trips to the Theatre in New York, and exploring Colonial American historical sites, to name a few.
Nona is predeceased by her parents Robert and Lelia Bane. She is survived by her husband David Cole; son Michael Turner and spouse Brenda Markovich-Turner, and grandson Lennon Turner of Austin.
She is also survived by her brother Doug Bane of Temple; niece Lauren Donald and grandnephew Noah Donald of San Antonio; niece Leahann McLaughlin and spouse Travis, grandnieces Kendall, Emery and Brynn McLaughlin of Oro Valley AZ.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM Saturday January 10 at St. John United Church of Christ in Robinson, Texas. Memorials in Nona’s name can be made at St. John United Church of Christ, www.sjucc.org/give, or the Alzheimer’s Association, https://alz.org/
