

Sol Neman, age 92 of Temple, died Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, August 5, 2011 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5-7:00 P.M. Thursday, August 4, 2011 at the funeral home. Mr. Neman was born on January 15, 1919 in New York, NY to the late Nathan Neman and Celia Wolstein Neman. He was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy on March, 14, 1941. Sol retired from the Pearl Harbor Command, U.S. Navy, from the Naval Base in Hawaii on July 1, 1967 after serving 26 years. The Commander of the Naval Ship Systems Command, J.J. Fee, stated in a letter to the Secretary of the Navy, "Captain Neman's contributions in the field of Naval Engineering have been consistently outstanding and his loss to the Navy will be keenly felt." Medals earned in the Navy include the Navy Unit Command, China Service, American Defense with star, American Campaign, World War II Victory, National Defense, Korean Service, United Nations Service for Korea and United Nations Service for Lebanon and Palestine. After retirement, Sol went to work for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Sunnyvale, CA fresh out of the Navy. He supervised the work of engineers and drafting personnel assigned to the electrical group. While there, he developed and evaluated concepts concerning electrical installations in deep submersible vehicles. In 1969, Sol and his family moved to Temple and took over the operations of Temple Iron and Metal from his father and also started Temple Steel Service. He also started Industrial Container Service, the first containerized trash and recycling service in Temple. Sol retired from Temple Iron and Metal Company on April 30, 1991. He was also a private pilot. Sol attended Temple College and graduated from the University of Texas. Sol was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Dena Neman; wife, Mildred Texeira Neman; wife, Louise Mitchell Neman; and a brother, Ben Neman. Survivors include a son, David Neman and wife Terry of Temple; two grandchildren, Jenna Neman and Spencer Neman; nephews, Steve Neman and Michael Neman, and Nieces Caryl Neman and Phoebe Matocha. Memorials may be made to Temple College in memory of Sol Neman.
