Verna Margaret (Phillips) Swander Ennen, 85, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2019, at her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on February 19, 1934 in Dewey, Oklahoma to Roy M. and Helen B. (Earp) Phillips, both preceded her in death. She married Carl Dawes Swander on June 6, 1953. They were married for 50 years when he passed on September 25, 2003. She later married Lloyd Ennen on August 20, 2011. He survives. Also surviving are Verna’s children: Karla (Elwood) Reynolds of Farmersburg, Roy Swander of Minnesota; Sarah (Chuck) Pearman of Terre Haute, Paul Swander of Avon, and Amanda (Ryan) Dabelow of Avon; grandchildren, Lindsay (Matthew) Switzer of Terre Haute, Joshua Strohm of Terre Haute, Jacob (Beth) Strohm of Vincennes, Stacey (Scott) Elmore of Terre Haute; Ryan (Brittany) Pearman, Chad (Lindsay) Pearman all of New Albany; Sydney Dabelow, Austin Dabelow, Cole Dabelow all of Avon; Isabella Swander and Isaac Swander both of Brownsburg; great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Addison Switzer of Terre Haute; Zoe, Phoebe, and Emery Strohm of Vincennes; Reagan and Ryan Pearman of New Albany; brothers, Charles (Virginia) Phillips of Texas, George (Aline) Phillips and Jim (Bryanna) Phillips all of Oklahoma. Survivors include Verna’s step-children, Debbie (Mike) Daily, David (Debra) Ennen, Terri (Steve) White all of Terre Haute; and Tracy (Brian) Inboden of Robinson, IL; eight step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren. Verna worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Ace Blind and Drapery. She previously worked at Chesty Foods. A fitness fanatic, Verna loved to exercise and stay in shape, especially by walking. When she wasn’t burning calories, she was making them. Verna was an excellent cook and was known for her cream pies. She loved to cook for her family. She enjoyed crafting and sewing in her spare time. Verna had a servant’s heart and was the cornerstone of her family. She will be truly missed. Verna’s family would like to thank Hospice of the Wabash Valley, especially Jennifer, Misty, and Jody for their kind and compassionate care during her final days. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 2 at Roselawn Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday, May 3. A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Kevin Szwarga officiating. Verna will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park.
