

Doris was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1930, the youngest daughter of Daniel and Katherine (Wehrhahn) Stender.
She attended Paterson State Teachers College and graduated from the Passaic General Hospital School of Nursing. She joined the Navy Nurse Corps in 1955 and as a Naval Officer, Doris toured the world with tours in Hawaii; Long Island, NY; Portsmouth, NH; Kwajalein Atoll (part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands); Charleston, SC, and Washington D.C. Doris was one of the head nurses for the President of the United States at Bethesda Naval Hospital when Gerald Ford was President. Doris retired from the Navy in 1975 after 20 years of service. Upon retirement, Doris returned to school and graduated from Georgian Court College. Doris met her future husband, William Arzt, after retirement and they were married in April of 1988.
Doris enjoyed traveling, going to live theater shows, and gardening in her spare time. She was the original neighborhood watch, always keeping an eye out on her local community where she was a fixture for over 45 years.
Doris was a proud member of the Retired Officers Association, Navy Nurse Corps Association, Women in Military Service for America Memorial (WIMSA), American Legion Post 129, American Legion Auxiliary 129, the John E. Brion Chapter 81 of Disabled Veterans Auxiliary, and a plank owner at the Navy Museum. Doris had a passion for all things military and the Army-Navy Game was a highlight each year, especially the fourteen consecutive years Navy won the game.
She was a long-time member of Christ Episcopal Church and a member of the Womens Morning Group of Episcopal Church Women. Doris was also a member of the Daughters of the Eastern Star.
Doris is survived by her sister Elizabeth K. Schuller, Passaic, NJ and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband William Arzt and her sister Frances Koval.
Visitation and Services will be from 2:00pm - 4:00pm on Thursday, 13 January 2022 at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River, NJ. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myer, Virginia at a later date.
