

Born in Passaic, New Jersey, Elizabeth was the cherished daughter of the late Louis and Theresa Nocerino. She was also predeceased by her sister, Joan Null, and her nephew, Michael Simonini. She is survived by her husband, Michael A. Barrella; her loving son, John M. Barrella, and daughter-in-law, Jill Wienbrock; her sister, Mary Simonini, and brother-in-law, Louis Simonini; her adoring nieces, Marisa Teranova and Kristy Davison, and her lifelong friend, Sister Gerarda Panek.
Elizabeth’s life was marked by her unwavering dedication to education, faith, and family. She attended Pope Pius High School before pursuing higher education at William Paterson University, where she earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. Her professional journey in Catholic schools spanned decades, beginning as a secretary and progressing to classroom teacher, principal, and ultimately, educational consultant. She worked in both inner-city and prestigious suburban schools, touching the lives of thousands of students and mentoring hundreds of educators, leaving a lasting impact on her community. During her decades in Catholic education, she taught and served as principal at several New Jersey Catholic schools, including St. Philip the Apostle School, St. Leo's Catholic School, Most Holy Name Catholic School, St. John the Baptist School, Sts. John and Ann, Holy Innocents Catholic School, and St. Leo the Great. Along the way, she formed treasured lifelong friendships with colleagues, students, and families alike. Her career was not only a testament to her intellect and leadership but also to her profound compassion and belief in the transformative power of education.
Elizabeth was a warrior in every sense. She faced a long battle with cancer with courage and grace, never allowing her illness to define her or diminish her love for life. She balanced a thriving career with raising a family, all while exemplifying strength, resilience, and unwavering optimism. To those who loved her most, she was affectionately known as “E-beth,” “EBGB,” and, most importantly, “Mamma.”
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Elizabeth’s passions and zest for life were boundless. In her younger years, she loved to play tennis, and in later years, she became an avid bocce ball player. Gardening was one of her joys, and she cherished long walks with friends and family, often accompanied by laughter and heartfelt conversation. She had a remarkable gift for entertaining, and her home was always a welcoming center of celebration, warmth, and holiday cheer.
Elizabeth’s character was as radiant as her life was full. Outgoing, generous to a fault, warm, and loving, she had a unique ability to make everyone she met feel valued, supported, and cherished. Through her faith and her work in Catholic education, she instilled values of kindness, integrity, and compassion in countless lives. To those who knew her, she was more than a mother, teacher, and friend—she was a guiding light, a mentor, and a source of endless love and encouragement.
Her legacy is one of devotion, service, and love. Elizabeth Ann Barrella touched countless lives, and her memory will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 130 St Maximilian Ln, Toms River, NJ 08757, US, on May 22, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm.
