

Joan B. McConkey, 74, a resident of Whiting, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at her home on March 7, 2026, at 11:20 pm. Born on August 8, 1951, in Newark, NJ, Joan was brave, beloved, inspirational, resilient, and strong throughout her life and in the way she faced every challenge set before her.
Joan graduated from Union High School and later raised her family in Lavallette, NJ, building a life grounded in devotion and steady care for those she loved.
A dedicated and hardworking woman, Joan spent 25 years as a Supervisor/Head Teller with Wachovia Bank. She also worked for 10 years at Victoria Secret and for 17 years at Stop n Shop. She retired to Whiting approximately 10 years ago.
Joan was married to the love of her life, Larry, who predeceased her in 1995. Joan was also predeceased by her companion William Sabba in 2022. She is survived by her son, Sean, and his wife, Mary Beth. She is also survived by her sisters and brothers: Susan Paul and her husband Kevin, Lori Reehil and her husband William, Brian Bankel and his partner Robert Marino, and Edward Bankel Jr., and his wife Lena. Also surviving are a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Joan found joy in the simple pleasures that made life full—she loved to shop, enjoyed playing Bingo and traveling, and cherished spending time with her dogs.
In Whiting, Joan gave generously of her time and energy as a Board Member of Pine Ridge South. She was instrumental in planning and organizing activities held at the association and was always willing to help out when needed, offering steady support and a dependable presence in her community.
Joan fought a 17-year courageous battle with breast cancer, meeting it with the same strength and resilience that defined her life and left an enduring example for all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River, NJ 087555028, on March 12, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, and again from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will begin promptly at 11:00 am following a short one hour viewing from 10-11 am on Friday, March 13th.
Committal will take place at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Rd, Wrightstown, NJ 08562, on March 13, 2026, at 12:30 pm.
