

Margherita “Margaret” (“Margie”) Vercelli, 97, of Holiday City in Berkeley Twp., NJ passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, NJ. Margie was born on October 8, 1925, in Jersey City, NJ, the first of three daughters born to Francesco Giammarino and Michelina (Manzo). Margie graduated from Ferris High School in New Jersey with a concentration in Business.
Margie met the love of her life, Andrew (“Andy”) Vercelli, in 1958 through a blind date arranged by her sister Lucy and Lucy’s fiancé Peter. Peter and Andy were best friends, having worked together for many years at the Division of Motor Vehicles. The blind date was successful, and they were married on April 25, 1959.
Margie worked in the banking industry, at first in New York City and eventually at National Community Bank in Rutherford, NJ, where she was promoted from teller to Executive Account Manager and handled the accounts of exclusive clients, many of which became her friends. She retired from National Community after working there for over twenty years. Margie and Andy lived in Lyndhurst until 1998 when they moved to Toms River to be close to her beloved sisters.
Margie was an enthusiastic baker. She was known for her Christmas cookies and Easter breads. She was also an accomplished crochetier, having made hundreds of blankets over the years. She was an ardent reader, and especially loved mysteries, Mary Higgins Clark being her favorite author. Margie loved the music of Bobby Vinton and was thrilled to see him from the front row when he appeared in Atlantic City.
Margie was a communicant of St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church in Toms River, NJ and was a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She was a quiet, kind, loving and compassionate woman who always found the good in every situation and was always willing to help anyone in need.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Andrew Vercelli on February 14, 2023. Margie was predeceased by her parents Francesco and Michelina; her sisters Lucy Dimaira and Jennie Giammarino; her brother-in-law Peter Dimaira and her nephew Frank Dimaira. Margie is survived by her niece Dr. Michele J. Dimaira (Dr. Louis DiPede); her nephew Frank’s wife Ann Dimaira; her great nephews Peter Dimaira, Louis and Rocco DiPede; her great nieces Jennifer Dimaira and Kathleen McKeon (Lawrence) and her great-great nephews, LJ, Kaden, Jack and Charlie. Margie also leaves many dear friends who were like family to her and Andy.
Visiting hours will be from 9:30 am to 11:30 am on Monday February 27, 2023 at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home 26 Mule Road Toms River, NJ 08755. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 pm at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church 130 St. Maximilian Lane Toms River, NJ 08757. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Toms River.
